I haven’t been to a coin show since I was a youngster. Laid the foundations to go to this one the second weekend in February and I am excited as a kid on Christmas Eve..... I just hope I won’t need to re-mortgage my home when I leave!.... Any other CT memebers going?
Nah, that's a little too far. I was going to go to the one in Charleston this weekend, but some things came up and I wasn't able to.
Have fun at the show! It's too far away for me as well, unfortunately. I haven't gone to as many shows as I used to...mostly because my two local coin shows have shrunk so much in size that they only have ~10 dealers.
That's a 4-hour drive for me, counting stops along the way. I often have the best intentions of attending out-of-town shows in the region, but when push comes to shove, I always find an excuse. Probably just as well. With 4 shows per year (usually) here in the Triangle, I have plenty of opportunities close to home to burn through my coin budget.
I know everyone is different..... I have pulled about a dozen coins that I plan to take with me. These aren’t cull coins by any stretch. Just coins I don’t mind parting with.... Is it bad form to negotiate with a dealer using cash and coins?
In my opinion no but you may not get as good a deal by doing so. The dealer you may decide to negotiate with may not be interested for a number of reasons. You may find a dealer that is willing to buy all or some of the coins you are willing to part with outright. You or the dealer are under no obligation to buy or sell. Have a good time st the show Randy. Wish it was closer to me.
I appreciate that. I just found out that my wife is going to use the opportunity to take our girl out of town to visit the American Doll retail store. I bet they will spend more than me!!
Really, it depends on whether or not the dealer wants your coins. Sometimes, they want you coins and a bit of extra cash gets you where you need to be. Sometimes, they don't want your coins and you're better off just going with cash. Remember - you don't have to actually buy anything from a dealer you sell to. It is perfectly acceptable to just sell coins and take the cash, if you can reach a deal that you are happy with.
Good luck, Randy, hope you come home with some good loot. Of course, we'll be happy to see the pictures. I too brought some trading material to the last show I went to in January. Most dealers are open to trades, but it certainly depends on what you're bringing too. The coins I had brought to the show most dealers were not interested in, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I ended up selling them outright to a dealer who had a table full of the stuff I had - then spent that money at other tables!
How I wish I were there with you right now. Can't wait to see what treasures you procure for your collection!
I am here two days. My plan was to browse today and buy tomorrow.... I failed in my plan. Once I get to my room this evening I’ll post some goodies. I have found a few head turners.
