A little about the coin. I actually bought this coin before the show. It would have been gone if I had waited. It came from a good friend I hang out with at Fun. I bought it knowing that it would not CAC. That's not a deal breaker for me.
I'll post the grade this evening after work. Have to make money for cat food and coins. :D

P.S. How is the luster in hand?

It's really nice but the wear and the surfaces, held it back to a 53. I agree with PCGS. Wish CAC liked it but that's ok.

    THAT'S A 53?

    Ain't no way.

You've shown us quite a few halves over the past few days. A few of them were clearly overgraded. A couple of them had grades that could be debated.

    This one is significantly undergraded.

Yea, we could debate all of them. Opinions based on images will always bring this out.

If you paid 53 money you did good.

Just goes to show the inconsistency in grading. This is the 6th you've posted and IMO the best by far yet it grades very similar to the others.

Now those are the kind of coins I would like to have as AU-53. :) From the pictures I would have guessed at least a 58. Very nice pickup.

A real beautiful example. I really like the die crack.

The way I "read" the photos was that there was considerable gray metal (rub) on the high points... more than a trace...which to me ruled out AU58. But there seemed to be plenty of luster left on the fields thus my guess of 55. That's a heck of a nice 53.

Pcgs is beyond brutal on reeded edge halves. I cracked out what I thought was a solid ngc au 55 which in gtg here got from 53-63 first try was xf 45 second I settled for the au 50 and unloaded it. Was a nice coin with similar wear. This coin is a 55 minimum I thought about that yet I was low on every other coin and I didn’t think 58 was a bad grade for it

Makes you wonder if the radial die cracks, not to mention about 3 that touch the rims on each side didn't affect the luster. That is an amazing coin!
    I see your point.

Wow... that's a pretty coin for a '53. You did very well with that one.

    I'd rather have a '53 under graded than a '66 over-graded. Killer score Larry.

Why don't you think it would CAC?

Excellent question, I see a couple of minor issues, but nothing too bad for an AU53.

Because it has been dipped and retoned. The toning pattern on the obverse indicates secondary toning, and CAC usually does not sticker a coin like this.
