Hey everyone! I recieved this quarter from my banker today and have no idea what it is. It's not silver and doesn't seem shiny enough to be a proof, is it silver plated? It's the quarter on the left. Any advice would be grateful! Thanks!
Plated. Not unlike these: https://franklinmintcoins.com/collections/quarters/products/colorized-state-qtrs-framed
Correct me if I'm wrong, but only a s mint mark on these would be silver. Anything else would not, and I'd agree that after market plating is the most likely cause of the silver appearance.
I got an 02P Tennessee the other day. I think they plated these in Silver, Platinum and Gold. They get the heart racing a little this one has a slight rail road rim, I was thinking that it might have been hollow but it weighs 5.7g.
It looks like it came from a mint set. Look at a quarter from a 2005 to 2010 U S Mint Set. They have a Satin Finish. Someone may have opened a set and spent them.
Is this correct? Any s state quarter is a proof? And only 2 versions were made: regular and silver. Regulars are lighter weight. Silvers are a slightly higher weight. None were officially plated, but after market silver plating did occur. However, after market silver plated quarter would still weigh the regular weight, not the heavier silver weight. So to answer this post: look at the mint mark, if it is San Francisco, it's a proof. Weigh it. If it is about 6.25 grams. If it is closer to 5.67g it is clad.
