A few months ago, I mentioned my "seeding" of my back yard, for my grandkids to use their metal detector (which I gave them for Christmas about 3 years ago). That was so much fun for them, & I believe there are still some treasures out there (they did find the Morgan & silver ring). Count me in the group that will never pass on a free penny, but my one real "glory" moment happened about 20 years ago. I was out mowing my front yard when I noticed little bits of paper flying around. I was going to ignore it but one of the larger pieces caught my eye, so I stopped & sure enough it was definitely a bill of some kind. It took me several minutes to collect all the pieces I could find, about 20 to 30 of them. When I finished with the lawn, I put the pieces together (attached with clear tape) like a puzzle, & behold, it was a $10 bill. More amazing, I had found every piece! And the bank replaced it with a brand new one!
Last fall I came outside to find a rain soaked dollar bill in my drive, and looked up and down the street for about 100 yds. Found these:
Well, we did look a little. But, it was about 60 years ago and that property has been sold at least 3 times since then.
Two "find" stories...Going to Tijuana, we parked and were walking across the pedestrian bridge at the border when my wife pocked up a wad of bills...$80! One Black Friday, years ago, I was standing in line at Fry's electronics to buy something when I noticed a bill at my feet. I picked it up and it was $100!!! I put it in my pocket and a few minutes later a young guy came walking back looking on the floor and asking if anyone found a $100 bill. I fessed up and gave it back. On the way out, I saw him at a register and touched his arm. He said thank you and said the money was from his grandmother that he had to buy gifts for her friends for her. Made me feel good.
I’m always keeping my eyes toward the ground or floors of business for possible lost or dropped coins/currency. Never kept a tally but I’m guessing in change alone within the past 40 + years it’s well over $200.00 Anyway just last Fall I was in our local Walmart Store, it was around 11:20 PM and hardly anyone in the store as for customers, maybe 20 individuals I’m guessing? As I walking toward the Sporting Good isle I looked across toward a isle to my right. I immediately recognized laying on the floor about half way down what I felt sure was U S Currency! I turned toward the bill(s) laying folded on the floor and after looking back and forth for (anyone) and seeing no one, I proceeded to count the bills. In my hands were (7) twenty’s and (1) ten. Yep, $150.00 cash greenbacks!!! I certainly didn’t feel right keeping the money, thinking it must belong to someone shopping in the store at the time. So I took the cash to the Customer Service Counter and turned it over to them, first after being told I could claim the Money if the rightful owner didn’t. They took my name etc. and informed me someone from the security department would contact me in two weeks or sooner. Well you’ve probably guessed it by now I’m sure? I waited three weeks and went back to the store and spoke with the Manager. I inquired if the money had been claimed and if so when? He gave me this big blank stare and said he knew nothing about this and never had? I had stupidly not asked for or received a receipt of the found cash and it simply disappeared? Go figure huh
I’m always looking for FOG. It’s something my father taught us including vending machine coin return slots. My recent large FOG is $6 in quarters in a municipal parking lot. The best find ever was when I was 9 years old. I would get up early on trash pick up day and collect newspaper and non ferrous metal to sell for scrap. The proceeds were used to buy American gold and silver coins under the guidance of my father. One morning I found $60 in a coffee can. I used that to buy my first gold eagle. I still have that coin and will always remember finding that coffee can.
My wife and I were at the bank night deposit real late one night. I tried to put our deposit in and it wouldn't go. Someone earlier had made a large deposit that clogged the opening. I had a difficult time getting that deposit out and finally put ours in. We took the other deposit to the Police Department and left it for them to handle. I can't believe they could be so lax to not know the deposit didn't drop.

I picked up a wad of bills in Bogota, Columbia in front of my hotel. Wow, a bunch of bills. Counted it and converted it and it was less than a dollar US.
Nice haul. You'll be rich by the end of the year. Hope you are staying aware of your surroundings while you have your head to the ground.
I love to find coins on the ground, but it reminds me of my sweet daddy. Every time he caught me looking at the ground, he would tell me about the man in his congregation that always had his head down while walking because he once found a coin. When he got to be an old man, he couldn't lift his head all the way up. I think about that every time I start looking for FOG, and wish I could hear him tell it once again.
