IMG_3094.JPG For now I just have a couple of cigar boxes and these little foam trays which my company uses to ship out radiation detectors. The guys in shipping were kind enough to let me have a few.. they're perfect and free :)
Can stack a cigar box 2 layers deep which is 40 coins

Thanks @DBDc80 Parthians & Roman republican denarii are my main collecting interests - but I do get easily side tracked.

Also, I've been looking at some of your jaw dropping online displays..
I have a friend who has a side gig as a professional photgrapher. We're going to get together one of these weekends and take some higher quality photos, then I can start work on a page =)

Great idea.. and the price is right!
I love to see the ingenuity to re-purpose items we have access to - it's smart and most importantly it saves money to buy more coins!!!

Here's an old jewelry box I purchased used from the Goodwill for $3.. add some spray paint and it cleaned up quite nice. I use this for coins I am currently "working on".. (to be fully attributed, photographed, etc.).. still working on what I should use for long term display/storage..

Thank you. It was a gift from my youngest son. Actually, both display cases were gifts from him - just years apart.

Bing - your display is fantastic!
I do have a question: the labeling/wording on the Legionary display... is the lettering burnt into the strips of wood and mounted on the display case? Or printed and somehow transferred? It is hard to determine from the photo. I am working on a plan for a cabinet .. I really like the lettering... just curious how it was done.... thx

It's burnt and painted. Very professionally done.

    @Lutok Thanks for your compliment.

Firstly, I'm thrilled this thread has taken off again. So many amazing displays posted, each with their own charm. A special shout out to @Nvb for the cigar box idea, @Bing for your display, and @Sulla80 for your tray style.

    In answer to your questions:

    - I just use regular paper from the printer. I find images from the Empire/Kingdom/State, and then try to create a 'water mark' or background style by playing with the colour and saturation in Word, so that it can sit behind the text, while still making out the original image
    - I do a little research on each of the rulers, mainly using publicly available sources on the Internet. I focus on what I want to, as there is only so much history you can squeeze into a little sleeve. In the case of Byzantium, my general approach is how effective the Emperor was, and whether they gained or lost territory
    - Yes, the coins are just loose in the pockets. They generally stay more or less put. Sometimes I need to correct them, but they mostly behave

Broadly speaking, I find the process of displaying the coins to be one of the most enjoyable parts of the hobby (other than holding the coin in the hand of course ;) ), as I get to tell a bit of a story about the period the coin was minted in.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I really like your ingenious setup @Nvb - are they just regular cigar boxes? and does the foam have those cut-out square windows?

Both boxes were given to me as gifts, they are very basic and about 10"x 8" x 2.5" deep.
The foam sheets come with those cutouts. It's absolutely perfect but a custom product that I just lucked into.
In my day job I work in a semiconductor fab that makes high end medical imaging devices and these sheets were made so we can ship one of our products to a customer.
