Yes, I have recently decided to add Canadian Silver Dollars (1935-1968) to my arsenal of different coin series to collect. I dont know alot about these coins so I have every intention of buying a few books on the subject. I have briefly scanned over a few bits of info and I'm very interested in attempting to start a set of these. Can anyone here recommend a reliable, trustworthy dealer in Canadian coins? Any additional info that anyone can provide would be deeply appreciated. Thanks!!
They were .800 silver and .200 copper. Very reasonable in price compared to Morgans and Peace for the most part and very low mintages. Here's a dealer I have found already. I've often thought of colecting the series. I have one I think from 1958 it has the totum pole on it, nice design. I hear that there is only one that is more than $100 in MS-63.
There are a few that are over $100 dollars according to the site I posted above. The real killer seems to be the 1948 dollar with a mintage of 18,780 that starts at $1,100.00 in VF20 which is a real bargain if you only consider the mintage. Obviously, there is no demand for this series, which explains the low prices.
I'm having a hard time navigating that site. From my memory your right the 48 is the key. The confussing thing for me is that there are so many commerative dollars that the canadian mint did along with standard issue dollars for circulation. I guess I need to do a lot more research if I was ever to get serious with this series.

Don't worry too much about that because the commeratives were issued as standard dollars for the year. Before someone so kindly relieved me of the burden of having to deal with all that weight, I had a couple hundred that were pulled from circulation. actually, that price is high - it's quoted in CND and as the USD has weakened, the CND has come on par with the USD. you can get the 1948 in XF for $1,100.00 USD. there is strong demand for the coin, but realize that the overall demand for Canadian coins is not nearly that of US coins. if you want to collect a hot series, jump into the Newfoundland coins - bring your wallet and be prepared. -Steve
i prefer the "Voyageur" and then "BC Commemorative" reverses, too much empty field on the goose for me. the 1949 "Matthew" is nice too. find a toned "Voyageurs" and you'll be hooked. -Steve
I bought a couple at a coin show last month for less than melt ($10.00) both A.U. - They have a nice design, but for me it was cheap silver!
Well everyone will have different preferences of course. Sometimes a simple elegant design just pops out to me... I remember that I thought that about the reverse of the Kansas quarters. I just love the simple wildlife-themed coins Canada minted in 1967, and have a full set of them. I can't imagine getting into collecting Candian silver dollars by series, but by type, maybe... I'd like to concentrate on my US type set first but every time I walk into the coin store I do get tempted by the various Canadian silver dollars they have, and might get one or two on ocassion. BTW I hate toned coins, but that's already been discussed in another thread lol...
