http://www.hertzfurniture.com/Storage-Cabinets--Steel-Storage-Cabinets--778--pr.html I was wondering will long term effects occur if I were to store coins in one of these? Does paint matter, I know not to use wood and metal normally is good to use but am I missing anything here?
As a painer I doubt it really matters all that much unless you plan on placing raw coins directly on painted surfaces. On the other hand why don't you look into a real safe?
the price comparison the area you get is a lot smaller than the cabinet for the same price and anyways, i definitely need a lot more room than even a good sized safe can provide
Security and fireproof comparison. You can store a lot in paper boxes that can be easily toted away or burned to a crisp along with your coins. Protect your investment by investing a bit more. Even a small safe for the better stuff at least.
those small safes only last 30 mins in a fire but I know what you are saying about protection.... if my walkers were ever stolen or ruined I would forever give up on collecting speaking of them, I really should finish the set, I am sooooo close....
Go to your local locksmith and look for a good used safe. Older safes are usually reasonably priced, heavy and most of them you can bolt down to the floor. http://www.nabble.com/Mercury-Dime-Forum-f31157.html
Real good point. A good, old fashioned lock smith is the answer. They get access to good, used safes and will sell them cheap. Look hard enough and I'd bet you could find a nice, used safe for the same amount you'd pay for a "cabinet". Who cares what it looks like as long as it does the job.
