I posted this capped bust half a few weeks ago when I purchased it but have since taken better photos and would love input on grade. The toning is beautiful in hand. I love the coin and would appreciate anyone's thoughts on it.
XF40. 1831 dates almost always have super nice obverse strikes that look AU, then weak reverse strikes that look VF. I've sent several of these in and they always come back XF40 and occasionally 45. But I bet yours is 40 max.
I'm at 40/45 Nice coin the toning is old album then dipped....I see this sort of effects on half dimes all the time. The old albums did tone coins esspecilty the reverses..dark
Solid VF30/35, however this Bustie may not receive a straight grade due to the light cleaning. I wouldn’t submit this coin, but I’d try to figure out the Overton variety...
I agree with the album toning suggestion. I've seen similar blue toning from a handful of old Whitman books I recently acquired. Also, take a look at the field in front of the bust in the lower photo...is that some sort of strike thru?
My first thought was VF+, but I wouldn't disagree with XF. Reasonably nice looking coin. It is O-103--one of the most, if not the most--common die marriages for the year.
