Your suppositions are incorrect for a damaged
copper-coated zinc cent.

PMD post mint damage.

 

The shield is higher in relief than the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. So the copper was eroded off there first. So the shield area shows zinc while the area around the rim still has the copper on it.

That’s why people use special tools to open rolled coins. The don’t want to damage all those lathe coins
