Well here's my order now that I got out of a meeting and can post it. Hoping for a flip at some point (still keeping 1 of each for myself no matter what), but even if not they'll make great gifts. 2x UC Silver Dollar 2x Proof Silver Dollar 1x UC $5 4x Kennedy Set 2x UC Clad Half Dollar EDIT: Just got the email that it was actually confirmed.
Got my order in. A lot of expected freeze ups. Got 2 each of the Silver, Proofs and unc. 2 proof 1/2, 3 unc. clad, 2 of the 1/2 sets, and 1 5 oz. I expect the 5 oz. to be on backorder, but at least I got my order in. Most of these will be gifts throughout the year.
I loved the space program when I was a kid, but Curved coins will not fit into my holders. Too expensive, and too much trouble. On second thought after reading what everyone else was getting I got.. Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Silver Dollar Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 2019 Proof Half Dollar Set The silver is .999 this year.
Yeah I think the mint only has about 25k of the 5oz minted currently. That's why so many are backordered.
Half Dollar Set is clad. Just want to make sure to let you know in case you bought it thinking it was silver. I think it's a keeper anyway though.
Yeah, I like the way the Mint used to say they make these clads to offer a low cost option. Now they charge more than they should cost if they were silver. These Apollo halves are going to be high mintage, yet also high demand, so we'll see if they do well. As for the Kennedy, eh, other Kennedy's in the same mintage range haven't done well. But, yeah, both halves have mintages worth putting away to complete your set. Due to the crazy markup on the commem halves, the series has some very low mintages, which have done very well as demand increases. Some of the lowest mintages have yet to realize their potential.
This new coin is capped at 100,000. What Kennedy's would you consider to be in the same mintage range? I liken it to the 1998 Matte Proof, of which only 62,350 were made - they trade at a premium today. It doesn't mean the 2019 will also, of course, but 100,000 is pretty small for the series.
A better comparison would be the 2014 clad half and the 2014 4 coin silver set, both in the 100k range and can be had for close to issue price. The 1998 was around 60k mintage and has the honor of the lowest mintage. Yeah, 100k is small, yet the market hasn't reward 100k yet, definitely worth putting away for someday and/or to complete your set.
You’re probably right. I think the only way to profit in the short-term might be a quick flip of the 5oz flying saucer. Backordered is not currently unavailable or sold out. They probably only had 15,000 of 100,000 on hand based on ATB 5 oz puck sales. I passed on these and have no regrets. Happy for those who got them as part of their collection though. TC
The set hasn’t even sold out yet so I wouldn’t worry too much. Odds are you’ll be able to find these cheap if you didn’t get one today.
Yeah, no sellout yet on anything but the backorder on the 5oz. oddly, there's also an Apollo Engraved Print that I signed up for at $17 shipped and they shipped last night, but it come to sale at noon for $20 +shipping. 8,000 max limit.
I passed as well. Just had a hard time seeing them get hot and it look like they're selling for like $280 on eBay so after shipping and fees there's no really anything there. I think you're right that they just had a small amount minted so maybe the first ones out may get some premium. The high mintages and stiff prices seem to have been enough to kill a lot of interest. It's not a good sign that not a single thing has sold out yet
As far as the halves "trading at a premium" in the future -- they're carrying a colossal premium from the mint. I bought some because I wanted to have them, but I think this is going to demonstrate that the mint can raise prices high enough to temper even the greatest enthusiasm for a subject. Over $25 for one. Clad. Half. Dollar.
I will be interested to see what the true (non dealer) demand will be for these once the dust settles (i.e., items officially sell out). I agree that moon landing/space is a popular theme but so was baseball and look what happened there. I remember when the Boy Scout commemoratives came out and people were speculating that demand would be through the roof, and that all former and current scouts would need to have them which did not happen. The Breast Cancer commemoratives also did not sell as well as people thought. I hope these Apollo coins get into the hands of collectors but would not risk investing in them for the long haul. JMHO, TC
I had went for the half dollars set for $54.00 plus shipping. I like the rest of the coin but the prices are just to much. I would like to get the $5.00 gold but the $420.00 price tag is just to to much.
Whatever the next big release like this is, I hope they gone down the premiums. Hopefully the mint takes this as a learning experience and we can have better in the future.
