I watching a coin on an auction site and it Graded MS65 by PCGS. It is a nice looking all white coin but has a hazy color on the chin/cheek area and around the lower ear. The seller told me it is not toning just a lightly discolored area. I'm just wondering as to what are some of the causes of this?
Might be a fingerprint as that doesn't count as wear and it might be because of the way it was stored. Since it's in a slab I would be ok with it but would look for another one...I have the same problem with a PF-66 franklin...I have 2 of the same date both by NGC one is a PF-66 and the other is a PF-67--the PF-66 is the one for my set but it has a haze almost covering the coin so I'm watching for another one. Could you post a picture of the coin from the auction? I have seen many Morgans with white frosting on the devices that is perfectly normal. Hazing is something that I associate with the fields, not the design. It would be easier to help you if I was looking at a picture.
Speedy, I contacted the seller and he told me that looking at it in person he would still consider the coin "white". That said it probably isn't on the slab.
I don't see that as hazing. It looks like normal Morgan frosting that I have seen on most of the nicer uncirculated ones I've looked at. The seller's pictures aren't that great so I can't get any real detail by blowing it up (even after saving it as a .tiff image). It's a very pretty coin and, as long as the seller's feedback is good and the price is reasonable for the grade, I would go for it.
Probably just a slightly toned area. The coin look nice -- minimal marks and a strong strike for an 83-O. The price is not a steal, but appears to be fair -- there are far more 83-O Morgans than look worse than better than that one!
