FFIVN and I took a quick trip over to the Annapolis coin show this morning. We didn't have anything in particular in mind to look for but I think we came out with some interesting stuff; 3 Greek and 1 Roman. FFIVN had $20 to spend. When we got there he decided that he wanted to find a Hobo Nickel. Unfortunately, none of the dealers had any so he decided to save it for the Baltimore show next month. We also ran into @Paddy54 while we were sitting at the ancients table. Tried to get him to come over to the dark side but he decided to get a beautiful US silver 3c and a really nice looking Bolivian coin...maybe next time I paid $80 for the 4 coins I was interested in and FFIVN got 2 freebies from the dealer. Both are going to be difficult to ID. If anyone who has some knowledge of North African -I think- or possibly Indian coinage, please help us out Phoenicia, Tripolis AE17. 2nd Century BC. Obv: Bust of Tyche right Rev: The Dioskuri on horseback galloping right Alexander III (The Great), AE17. ca 336-323 BC Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lionskin Rev: B (thunderbolt) A between a club and bowcase. Greek, uncertain mint ca 2nd-1st century BC AE 20, Obv: Female head right, maybe Artemis? Rev: Cornucopia and caduceus Trajan Denarius. 114-117 AD. Onv: IMP CAES NER TRAIAN OPTIM AVG GER DAC PM TRP COS VI, laureate draped bust right Rev: PM TRP COS VI PP SPQR, Genius standing left, holding patera and corn ears.
Here are the two unknown coins. If anyone can point us in the right direction we'd greatly appreciate it! 2.60g, approx 16mm 1.35g approx 19mm
I always wanted a Hobo nickel but only if it were a real one from Depression era. Most are recent carvings even if on real buffalo nickels. I never found one in my price range. Best wishes to FFIVN. I am worse than useless in Islamic coins and only recognize the ones you have IDed so Useless is the name of my day.
All i can tell on the top coin is that it has, I believe, the Seal of Solomon on one side and what looks to either be a horse or antelope or something on the other side.
Nice to see you today in Annapolis.....Glad to see you and your son found some keepers. I came home with 3 nice specimens. You saw 2 in hand. Hope to see you guys at the next show!
Just about to post it, Justin! Let Alexander introduce you to his friend, da Club. This coin is boss! Erin
That is a much nicer looking one than mine I gotta say, that club is pretty nasty looking. Would not want to be on the receiving end of a thwack from that!
I wouldn’t want to pair your zombie Herakles’ thirst for brains with the club. Yikes! Zombie Herakles by himself is pretty cool though. Good job! Erin
Soldier? (Referring to your avatar tag line). I like the red stuff myself. Happy to see old 'furry' finding stuff, and (again) happy to see old Paddy didn't fall off the 'Key' bridge.........
Well, better late than never. I might have an id for this one? Here's mine that looks very similar: Laodikeia, Phrygia Æ 20 (c. 133/88-67 B.C.) Laureate, draped bust of Laodice or Aphrodite right / [Λ]AOΔI[KEΩN], single cornucopiae, caduceus behind it. Walcher coll. 2789; SNG Cop 501-502; BMC 40-43; SNG Tuebingen 4127; SNG Munich 345-346.
