I just bought this 55 from Heritage at 3800.00. I posted it in the whats it worth section and was told to come here. I have another one that I will be selling soon. My questions are did I pay too much? And what does FS-101 mean on PCGS slabbed coins? thumbnail2.jpg thumbnail.jpg

Based on recent auctions, yes you proabably over paid. But this coin still has a decent bit of color on it for being a RB so you might get close to making your money back, but once you factor in fees you will proabably be taking a loss.

Were you looking to really get one?

Yes, you would be looking at 35-45k if you can find one for sale. Better start saving!

Yes I was looking for a 55 MS Red or RB. There is one on ebay and I offered that guy 4k with free shipping and he said no. I bought this coin from Lawrence so I can trade up with them.

Seriously, if you have that kind of cash to throw around (pardon the expression) it seems the knowledge held prior to spending 4k would be a given. I guess that's what makes some kinda question the question. :)

FS-101 is the attribution code for the '55 Doubled Die listed in the Cherrypickers Guide. "FS" represents the last names of the authors of the book, Fivaz and Stanton. All of the major grading services use this attribution code.

I didn't want to pay that much but it is what it is. I feel sure I could get that out of it if I wanted to sell it. It has a lot of red on it and I like it. It's the lowest grade coin in my wheats and their all PCGS slabbed coins. My 1909 s vdb is MS 65 red. I only buy PCGS slabs. Makes me feel good to pull all of my coins out of the boxes and look at them for hours. Took me 25 years to put it together. Thanks Chris for the explanation on the FS-101. I guess the FS is for first strike?

I should say that I haven't been active in the hobby for 12 years so I don't know prices now.

The "lowest" grade you have? Well, either you're very well off so money shouldn't matter or something else is missing from the story. Do you have a pic of the second 55?

Wait a second...you paid almost 4k for a coin. Arguably one of the biggest know Lincoln cent errors and you seemingly didn't do enough research to know what FS-101 meant? Just want to make sure I understand that correctly...:troll:

Yep, I didn't know what that meant. It must be a new grading system as I never saw that when I was actively buying. And I don't think I will be showing my collection here. I don't need a interrogation.

Is it Heritage or is it Lawrence?

Try not to take it personal. We are a group that prides ourself in the research. Most of us can’t afford to spend 4 figures on a coin, so if we are going to, we put in lots of research. It’s not a dig on you, just a preference. And we ask about the other coins because we love seeing coins! :)
