I recently purchased my very first MS65 Morgan Dollar. It's an 1881-S, my favorite date/mm. Perhaps there are a few guys on here who'd like to take a shot at vamming this gorgeous girl?? I picked up this MS63 as well, as I couldn't resist. It's been too long since I bought some 1881-Ss. The luster on this 63 is FAR superior to the 65. I mean, it has magnificent bowl luster! I'm mesmerized.... A comparison shot showing the difference in luster. The 63 appears to have a sharper strike as well. And a short video clip showing that cartwheel luster.
Can someone explain to me why that second coin is graded MS63? It looks closer to MS65 than it does MS63 IMO, especially if the luster is as you described.
Yeah, I have the same thoughts. The 63 coin looks incredible. However, the 63 has a hit on Liberty's lower jaw line and a couple of nasty gashes below the "T" in UNITED on the reverse. The 65 coin is cleaner. It just doesn't have that POP. Heck, maybe the 65 should be a 66.
@Lehigh96 Even though @Ike Skywalker did an excellent job of imaging his coins grading these two pieces would be difficult with pictures. To accurately answer your question, it would be best to have them in hand. The True Views from PCGS and his two pics of the dollars in slabs, which by the way are EXCELLENT, are meant to be "Glamour Shots" which really hi lite the positives not negatives.
I'm aware of all of that, but if you look at his photos and the video, there is no way that coin deserves an MS63 grade.
Thanks, @tibor. You're absolutely right. My slab shots are definitely "glamour" as I combine the TrueView images with my picture of the slabbed coin. My current iPhone setup just won't allow for adequate, satisfactory shooting of full slabs. The coin itself is always either too dark or too overexposed. I'm in talks with Ray at the moment to purchase his System-3 so that I can start learning to take truly high resolution images of coins ranging in size from dimes to dollars, either raw or slabbed. I agree. I think it's a solid 64 at the very least, but TPGs are tough on this issue since they generally come nice. It seems they were downright angry at this coin for daring to be yet another gorgeous 1881-S.
No Doubt the early "S" mint morgans are beautiful. Nice additions @Ike Skywalker. That MS63 is awesome.

Thank you @Ike Skywalker . I have a '78, 79, 80 and 81 that closely resemble that 82. Some have the star designation from NGC. San Francisco produced some absolute stunners in the early years of Morgans. They certainly lost their touch in striking large silver coins in the Peace Dollar era.
I have a couple of questions on this 83-O. Is it a weak strike MS or an AU. And the other question is on the Vam. I looked a bit but all the reverse vams seem to be connected to the MM. this has the right wing die crack but check out the die crack btwn the left wing and the wreath. Also seems to have the neck spike die crack on the obverse. Thanks
