This coin was found with a small group of very early 20th century U.S. coins while metal detecting in a city park. It looks like some kind of Arabic coin. My heart about stopped when it was first exposed as I thought I'd found my gold coin. I guess its brass but it came out shiny clean like you see it. Can anyone decipher it and at least date it? Greg
I believe it is 50 Dinar brass Iranian coin after much web surfing. The date is still a mystery...maybe as late as the 1940's?? Go figure............ Greg
Greg: It looks good to me and I would have had a heart attack if I had dug it. Nice. You shuold submit it to Western & Eastern Treasures for the gold coin club. (I mean a picture, not the coin.)
I don't know, kinda has that gold look to me. The denomination is definitely 50 somethings. The date below it is either 1217 or 1317, can't really tell. Either way, that puts it at 1802 or 1899 respectively, and 50 dinars in 1899 I'm guessing would call for a gold coin.
have you weighed it??? Have you experimented with a magnet??? I dont think gold is magnetic but not sure and I have no clue about brass. Ok run all sorts of tests Im sure we can figure it out. See how much water it displaces something. I know if I thought I had a gold coin, I would get to the bottom of it. Nice Find!!!!!!!
Also, based on the emblem, I would say it's definitely Iranian/Persian. Could be a fake coin, too, I guess.
I dug out an old triple beam scales I had. I don't know how accurate it is. As near as I can tell, the coin weighs about 3.75 grams. It just doesn't feel heavy enough to be gold and I don't believe it is. If the date estimates are close, the 1899 puts it in the area of those found with it. Greg
