I spent this past weekend in Fort Worth - mostly to see the grand kids and my daughter. They also had 2 50 table coins shows there going at the same time. I am sure that you are not interested in hearing about the 1st grade BB game or the zoo, but the coin shows both disappointed me and amazed me. Disappointed - I found a total of less than 10 nice Lincolns in the 100 tables. No body had much of anything for sale. The only reasonably price slab I found was a 1931-S NGC MS-63 RB for $270. Price was fair for a 63, but the coin has a big baggie on the face, one on the bust, a scratch above the "ONE" and between the wheat ends. My 61's look better than it did. There were also 2 31-S's MS 64 RD price at $575 (grey sheet = $275 ask), 11-S MS63 RB for $375 (grey sheet = $215 ask) and someone want $250 for a 52-S NGC MS-67 (I stop bidding at $75 on eBay). They also had a 09-S MS65 RD for $1450 - both over priced and over my head. Amazed - Mostly by the prices. I also met a couple dealers who were quite interested in seeing my Lincolns that I am going to slab when things calm down. They actually agreed with my grades and sounded like they knew what they were saying. They thought my 14-S had a shot at 64 BR, 16- 65 RD, 17- 65 RB with a star, and 29-D 65 RD. Someday soon - I hope.
I was at a show in Grapevine (east of FW) a month ago. I think the overall quality was a little better than what I'm hearing at this latest show, at least on certified coins. Got some good deals on a few Morgans. Got a good deal selling, too. I will say it was tough to agree on raw coins grade. I was shopping draped bust H10c - 50c, and they were routinely overgraded by two grades or more. F15 was advertised as XF40 - and scratched at that ! A problem F selling as XF ???!? The trend I saw was take a F15, grade it XF40, price at VF35 greysheet. No deal. Even worse on old copper raw (1/2 c, large C).
Oh... one more detail I heard at the Grapevine... an 1880 PR65 CAM 5c Shield ! Herded that lil' doggie on home to my ranch. ...and I still prefer the original Creedence Clearwater version...
It's been that way for several years now. And not just at that particular show but at all the shows. There is no fresh, nice material out there. Show after show same old coins being passed around from dealer to dealer. Everybody that wanted to sell their nice stuff has already done it. Sure common stuff is all over, and even keys can be found in common grades. All of it is priced up there ! And that's why - because there's nothing nice, accurately graded for what most would consider fair prices. You want it - you pay for it.
Man, sorry to hear about the lousy time man. Atleast it sounds like you got some nice Lincolns. What were the others if you don't mind me asking? Phoenix
That .. and the fact that they have about 12 shows a year in that area now so it makes it even harder there than other areas to find 'fresh' material anymore. The tables are so high the dealers are passing the cost onto the collectors. The organizers are basically draining the region dry.
Not sure what "others" you are referring to. However, I forgot to mention they also liked my 1919-D & S. Both 63 RD they thought.
You said you bought 10 nice Lincolns, and I can only see you mentioned the 31 S. Probably mentioned them, I just didn't see them probably. What I meant to ask was "What were the other 9 Lincolns you bought?" Phoenix
No. I "found", i.e. saw. I did not buy any of the slabs. They were way overpriced. The only thing I bought was a 09-S raw. I think (hope?) it will go 61/62.
The local shows here...same thing. This weekend is my coin club annual show, that should be a great one, lots of new stuff I'm hoping. I am entered into a poker tourney in Laughlin NV same weekend as a coin show, timing strictly by luck of the draw of course, lol *wink*, I hope to find some goodies. Too bad because if I do good in tourney, that means no time for show, either way it'll be fun. When you get a chance, post that 09-S !!!
