As I have stated in my previous boring posts, the wifey and I are old and on Social Security, but I still have a passion for collecting coins. One series that I have recently gotten into is PCGS PRFDCAM 69 Jefferson Nickels. I have been getting them for $8.00 or less shipped and a few at $5.00 on ebay. They are shiney, good looking little coins and I really like their appearance. Yes, I realize they will probably never be valuable, but that is not the reason I started collecting this series. I just plain old like them. Heck, you can buy a coin cheaper than the certification prices by PCGS. I just recently picked up the 2014-S Bison five cent piece on ebay. Sure is a fine looking coin to me. Paid high dollar of $7.00 shipped for this one. Think I will start looking around for some other cheaper PCGS coins also. No true focus on my collecting except what I like at the time. My collection is classified as "DRC". DISORGANIZED RANDOM COINS. LOL. Sure is fun, and I love it. Senility (sp?) has finally found me. I sure hope I haven't posted this before.
Absolutely nothing wrong with spending a couple bucks for something you enjoy. Keep getting what makes you happy and enjoy them
Nice coin! Collecting is collecting. All that matters is that you enjoy it. (I am a low budget collector too.lol)
You are much like I. My collection is a hodgepodge of coins. I am a low budget collector as well. I do most of my buying on eBay. I live in a small town in Maine and the Coin Dealer here is very nice his inventory is rather on the high side. I was buying a bunch of stuff not know what I was doing. I finally, after learning a lot of what I bought had been cleaned and worthless started learning a little. I am extremely leery of buying a raw coin on eBay now as I am not experienced enough to be sure it is not a cleaned coin. So I started looking at the graded coins. They are very shiny lol. Kind of like seeing a squirrel they got me. As you said, one can pick them up for reasonable prices. The coins are beautiful and it is fun to collect them. I have been going for many of them. Not just nickels. I mostly go for America the Beautiful series and the State Quarters. I try to be patient and place my max bid and if I win wonderful, if not I try again. I also have collected some pennies, nickels, dimes and regular quarters. I like to get them is silver if I can find them affordable. I have had better luck getting them in silver than I expected. It has helped me a great deal focusing somewhat on an area and has made it more fun. I am a disabled veteran and a bit older so I know about the budget too. I think that makes it fun as well. The challenge to get what you want exists. I think that just being able to buy everything on a whim would take the excitement out of it. Anyways, I just noticed I wrote a book, sorry. Have fun all, Brad
I too have a low coin budget and I understand that completely, I think the most ive paid for a coin is $40
There is no right coin series to collect. As many here have said, buy what appeals to you and stay happy.
I too am low budget collector myself, I enjoy getting the proof sets and have a couple of the silver eagle special sets. Got several sets for Christmas presents. I’m looking to add the Apollo 11 half dollar set to my collection next and gonna start the American innovators proof collection. Just got the Proof American inventors dollar. Happy collecting and get what you like and enjoy
Collect what you like, and like what you collect. It's your collection and only you need to be happy with it. Also, have fun while doing it! Bidding on eBay coins can be a rush, just don't get carried away. I've caught auction fever before...
Yes, I have gotten carried away a few times! It is easy to do. Sometimes someone will post a whole series of dimes or nickels several minutes apart and I bid on all of them. Wouldnt you know I start winning all of them lol, and start wondering how I tell the wife . I keep it under control overall, but you are right it is easy to lose control.
You have described the fun and enjoyment of collecting coins. It's wonderful that you and your wife share in this.
For those of you that like the "State" and "ATB" quarter sets ... I'll make you a deal. I'm talking pocket-change coins here ... not BUs or proofs. Let me know what you need and I'll send you what I've got ... you cover the postage. I've got lots of extras.
Well, my budget is an "allowance." I know, 54 years old and stuck on an allowance lol. It works well as I am not the smartest with money all the time so my wonderful wife handles that part of life. As I mentioned in an earlier post about the getting carried away. Here is a picture of the coins I purchased, the price list, and they sent me a PCGS slab holder for free - my very first one. A total of 14 coins all but 1 PR69 one is a 70 (not sure that really matters). 8 nickels, 4 quarters 1 of which is an America the Beautiful, and 2 Sacagawea (yes I had to look the spelling up ) dollars. I am not sure if I can list the seller or not. If I can let me know and I will. I got the coins in just 3 days. I am really happy and will be playing with my "lighted 10X" magnifying glass for a while tonight haha. Brad
If your object is to have slabs, you did good. Many coin shows have dealers who sell slabs at really low prices.
I started going with slabs on ebay as they are not to very expensive and I got burned, due to inexperience, on coins that had been cleaned. So, until I become much smarter I plan to stay with the slabs for a while. I have heard they can be couterfitted as well but I am hoping in my price range it is not worth it to the counterfitters.
