    Hello Everyone
My name is Rich and I am very new to coin knowledge but I do collect a lot of coins and have quite a bit given to me when my grand father passed away years ago so I will have plenty of questions but first questions is it normal for a 2005 nickel to have such a large face on it? I have not seen it on other 2005's.
    Thank you
    Rich

Actually normal for that year, but different from the previous heads.

What you have is a common westward journey Jefferson Nickel with corrosion.

For the years 2004-2006 the US Mint redesigned the Jefferson nickel to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark Expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase. The 2004 issues kept the original Jefferson bust on the obverse with two different designs on the reverse...."Peace Medal" and "Keelboat". The 2005 issues have the partial head of Jefferson facing right with two more different designs on the reverse...."Bison" and "Ocean in View". Finally, in 2006, the face of Jefferson was created "forward-looking" which was a first for the US Mint on our coinage, and this one was called "Return to Monticello" because it reverted to the original reverse which showed Jefferson's home.

You know, if I had said anything else, I would appear to be a pretty big idiot considering that I have about 18,000 uncirculated Westward Journey nickels.

You can plagiarize my comments if you wish. I don't care.

    Chris;)

Ok that makes me feel really stupid but I did say I have very little knowledge of coins. I really appreciate the feed back.
How about a 1986 zinc penny?

Don't be too hard on yourself. You're still learning.

Now, for the 1986 Lincoln cent, it would be better if you started a new thread in the Error forum with an appropriate title. A lot of people might miss it altogether in this thread. I don't collect Lincolns, so I'll leave it to others to help you.

First time for a circulation coin, but it had been done before on commemoratives. First one was the Maryland Tercentenary half dollar in 1934. Then the Booker T Washington in 1946. Washington half in 1982. SOL $5 in 1986. Olympic $5 in 1988 and at least 11 others before the 2006 nickel.

These kinds of posts make me laugh. Something I would of asked when I first started. But I knew the difference of designs. But this is normal.

Welcome to CT. Please go buy the Red Book so you can acquaint yourself with the coins you have question about. Don't pay too much attention to the listed prices, but note the design of the coins and read the information about them.
