here is a morgan i picked up for $30 from an online dealer (not ebay). i have 30 days to return it. it was sold as bu. just looking for some opinions as to weather or not its worth to $30 i paid for it. thanks everyone! Greg
From the images it looks like a cleaned AU example to me and I would definitely suggest returning it. Also, if you have to ask on a coin like that, you are better off buying coins which have already been certified by a highly respected grading company.
Hold it at a 45 degree angle by the edges (outside of the case) under normal incandescent light (a desklamp, for example). Rotate it back and forth and side to side and see if you can see a reflection that "cartwheels" around the coin as you rotate it. A coin with natural mint state/bu luster will have that effect, while a cleaned coin will not. The dullness of the coin seems to tell me that it's been cleaned, so I would return it. Chalk it up to experience, but I agree - buy PCGS and NGC if it's sight unseen.
Connie, the coin has been cleaned. Look at the Motto on the reverse, see how its dull around all the letters and shiny in the fields. Theres a hint.
I did as you suggested, and there is a mirror effect to it. Maybe my use of a cheap scanner was not the best choice for quality pictures on here. I will take it to the local snobby coin dealer on wednesday when i pick up my new merc dime album and see what he says. I just fear that he will ignore me as usual and get annoyed at my 1,000 questions.
