what (exactly) is a jeton?

Are they commemorative coins? Are they coins at all? Similar to trade ducats?

To save repeating what has already been said about jetons have a look at the thread entitled `1680 French coin w/ U.F.O.?' commencing 4th January 2005. There are other threads which have little bits about jetons in them too (such as the Castorland half dollar / jeton etcetera). You just need to go back a page or two in the thread archives to get to them.
