I know this is a little late for a year in review, but it wasn't until yesterday that I finally had the time to go through my coins and review all that I purchased. 2018 was a really good year for me. I got 54 coins, with the majority being medieval English and Seleucid silver. That said, it was a very eclectic year as I picked up Roman, Islamic, World, and ancient Chinese coins too. The only criteria I used to populate this list was the level of satisfaction I derived from adding the coin to my collection.

10 - Henry III VLC Halfpenny from Carlisle
    Carlisle 2.JPG
Carlisle is the rarest mint for Henry III. To get a coin from said city, even a cut Halfpenny, was exciting.

    9 - Seleukos I Nikator tetradrachm.

Its not rare or significant, just a really pretty coin. Sometimes that is all that matters.

    8 - Edward III Series D Groat
    Edward III Groat D (1).jpg
Series D groats of Edward III are common, but this one is uncommonly attractive.

7 - Edward III Demi Esterlin

These demi Esterlin are a numismatic mystery, stylistically unique, and rare. That makes it top 10 material.

6 - Antiochos II Theos tetradrachm

Laodikea ad Mare is an uncommon Seleucid mint and rare for Antiochos II. The obverse is really pleasing too.

5 - Antiochos II Theos tetradrachm

I'm a sucker for a pretty face, especially when it is Seleucid silver.

    4 - Arkragas AE Hemilitron

A gift from Mrs. TheRed. I love the eagle and crab on this bronze. It's even better in hand.

3 - Metz Thierry V de Boppart AR Gros
    475039.jpg
What can I say about this coin other than it is gorgeous? I fell in love with it at first sight.

    2 - Antiochos I Soter Tetradrach
    20180810_092048.jpg
This is a coin struck by Philetairos, founder of the Attalid dynasty, in the name of Seleukos I Nikator, the founder of the Seleucid Empire, shortly after his assassination by a son of Ptolemy I Soter, founder of the Ptolemaic
    dynasty.

1 - Edward III Calais Groat

After years of searching I finally got an Edward III groat from Calais. These groats are both rare and historically significant.

Thank you for reading my post. Please feel free to add any coins or comments. I love seeing similar coins in other collections.

The ancient ones are my favorites, particularly the two Seleukos Nikator tetradrachms and the Akragas hemilitron, with its fine selection of seafood (crab, octopus, conch) :).

My favorite is the Akragas but I have to admit I would have trouble passing up a cut halfpenny with two eyes, nose and mouth as well as identifiable mint info even if it were a common one. Imagine the other half of this coin.

That Arkragas coin looks great for it's type, very nice gift from Mrs!
I see you are really into Seleukid tetradrachms, they look great, especially the one minted by Philetairos is a very special one.

I don't know why the face of Antiochos II spoke to me. It's so original. The remaining other coins deserve, for each one, the word : Congrats...

  15. Orfew

    Orfew Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus

Excellent top ten. I love the Edward III groat, but the other medieval coins are also great.

I still want both the esterlin and the demi esterlin. Such an unusual portrait.
