Newly found '65 SMS set in my assortment of stuff and in looking it over closely, found what I feel is a DDO-003 stage A Kennedy Half. Compared it to VV and it has the markers in all the right places (the die gouges on the D of UNITED and the R of AMERICA which you can see in the 2nd pic). The most prominent doubling is found on the TY, WE TRUST, and the 5 with lesser doubling on IN GOD, the R, and the hair directly under the R. There is also doubling of his lips from the top of the chin to the bottom of his nose, but up in the air if that is true doubling or just MD. Going against preferred procedures, but the pics are through the cello in case I want to keep the set intact but most of the details are visible. @Rick Stachowski , do I get a thumbs up from you on this one???
If it has doubling in the hair, under the " R " in LIBERTY . It isn't #3 . http://varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/kennedy doubled dies 1965-1966.htm
The two gouges were the details that made me go with #3 because I did not see them listed on any other variety. I don't know if the doubling I see in the hair is too miniscule to count, but I do see it and that's just with 5x mag. If I may ask, what choice would you be leaning towards if not #3 then?
Okay, that has all the makings of what I have, but I'm still scratching my head over the gouges listed as markers that fit mine perfectly. I wish they had pictures to compare to as well as descriptions for all the listings.
Make sure you study the coin good . Read the descriptions on the site I posted and then match it up .
I've done everything short of giving this thing a prostate exam. I looked at all the choices and 6 & 7 are for regular strike, not SMS as mine is. From the description alone it matches #2 but for markers it matches #3. Am I putting too much emphasis on the markers when I should be looking more at the overall description? I guess it depends on if mine is considered light, med, or strong spread? This one is giving me a headache and I'm probably giving you one
It looks like you have the 65 SMS DDO-003. It can't be the 65 DDO-007 because the -007 is a BS not a SMS. Attached are some photos of the CONECA listed DDO-003, the die gouge on the D of UNITED, the die gouge on the R of AMERICA, and the die gouge right of the upper 5 of the date, with TRUST.
