Hi! This is my first thread! I am collecting roman usurpers coins so I will be sharing with you some of my pieces. I would like to see a lot of usurpers so, please, share your examples with me! This is my Eugenius: DN EVGENIVS PF AVG, bearded, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / SPES RO-MANORVM. Victory walking left, holding wreath and palm. Mintmark AQP. RIC IX Aquileia 59.
You've chosen a challenging niche! @ValiantKnight has a number of usurpers too and will surely be interested in your collection. I have no coins of this usurper but want one simply because his name makes me smile... "You Genius!"
Back in 2009 - 2011, I worked with a musician/performer who went by Yougenius. Here in Houston, Texas. I worked with a TV program called " Alternative Scream " as a cameraman and Yougenius and his group appeared on our show several times.
Welcome! Eugenius is on my list, but I have never managed to snag a coin of his. I do have some usurpers that I can share later. Usurpers are indeed challenging... and expensive!
Great thread to start with, Macrianus - welcome! Here are some examples minted by the Usurper Augusti Carausius and Allectus: Carausius established Mints at London (Londinium) and Colchester (Camulodunum - Clausentum) -- "C" Mint -- and across the Channel in Gaul which began to produce coins of distinctive style in gold, silver and bronze. The coins depicted here were minted in Britain at either the London (Londinium) or the "C" (Colchester/Camulodunum/Clausentum) Mints. Assassination of Carausius by Allectus In 293, Allectus, who was the chief minister of Carausius, assassinated him (or orchestrated his assassination) and proclaimed himself Augustus of Secessionist Britain. The coinage produced by Allectus Allectus continued operation of the London and "C" mints and coins were issued in his name and bearing his portrait. In addition to the silver washed copper Antoninianus of Carausius, Allectus issued a copper coin of reduced size bearing the letter Q in the exergue, which has been interpreted to mean Quinarius (half antoninianus) denominaion. Welcome, Macrianus! Eugenius I have only none...still looking for. It's on my wish list. BTW, congrats! Neat coin!
Welcome, Macrianus. That’s a challenging collecting theme, alright. I’m looking forward to your other coins. Here’s Laelianus, who attempted to usurp the authority of another usurper. LAELIANUS AE Antoninianus. 3.55g, 22.5mm. Colonia Agrippinensis (Cologne) mint, AD 269. RIC 9; Mairat 231. O: IMP C LAELIANUS P F AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right. R: VICTORIA AVG, Victory running right, holding wreath and palm frond.
Carausius is my favorite usurper. Born in the northwestern Gallic region, a Menapian, from the southern Netherlands. A smart, far-sighted pirate, emperor of Britain, until he was treacherously murdered by his not-so-smart lieutenant, who didn't live long, either. I don't have much to show here, but for this barbarous imitation of a Carausius antoninianus. Carausius 287-293. AE Antoninianus. Obv. Radiate head right. Readable text IMPCCA ... VG. Rev. Salus? Pax? with a text that I can't read, but there's a cross or an X at the end. 15-17.5 mm (oval), 2.41 gr.
