Just playing with the pictures, but this arrived in the last week. So do you like clickable thumbnails or the full size pictures? Trying some different things with photobucket.

    Marc,

Awesome coin. What does that grade at as it looks like it is slabbed. I am guessing MS 65 or 66? Possibly higher.

    Regards,

PCGS 64rb - if you look you see a little brown in the recessed areas on both sides, more noticeable on the reverse. Comes close to red, but red-brown is accurate in my opinion. It is a nice strong strike.

Wow, that is one sweet IHC! I prefer the full size images, but of course I have Broadband. :D What grade did the TPG assign? Ms-64 R? Looks either 64 or 65, but I could be wrong. Very sweet coin man! :thumb:

Nice coin. I thought for sure it would make Red. But um, how strong is the details behind the Indians ear??? I said MS63 because it looks like weaker details behind and below the ear. The hair and the headdress look kind of weak to me. Is that just the picture??? I ask this because Im trying to better my grading abilities.

Nothing wrong with your guess. It is hard to grade by pictures alone. I actually think my pictures make it look more red than it is and heritage's pictures make it look more brown than it is. I just pulled it out and checked - I think if those tick marks in the feathers were not there this would have been a 65RB. I like my indians more brown than red - so that is what attracked me to it on Heritage. I was really surprised when it came in and the actual coin was a good fit in my collection(various grades and colors).

The aspects of the strike that you mentioned are not particularly unusual for business strike Indian cents and don't usually result in deductions from the assigned grade. I believe that the grade is more likely to be affected by factors such as contact marks, spots, streaks, stains, lack of luster, etc.

Mark, from the images that looks like a nice, solid-for-the grade coin, and I'm not saying that just because we have the same name:D

Alright thank you. I thought strike had alot to do with the grade. I know that the diamonds are usually weak on most indains. And Ive always based my opinion of the grade on details. But Ill have to take another look at my high grade Indians and do some comparing to slabbed coins online. Thanks

Strike can certainly affect the grade, but usually the strike on a given coin is considered and compared against what is typical for that date and type. So if a certain date/mint/coin is usually weakly struck, the graders will be more somewhat more forgiving.

Don't always believe they are weak. Keep looking for examples where those details are stronger than usual and you will have a primo set of IHC's. I have some 64's where the feather tips are weak in the first two - yet the luster remains all across them and the rest of the strike is great. So if you like those details -look for them. You might have problems with a few dates, but you can find them for most dates. If I get a chance I will post some more examples of varying grades where I think the grade matches the coins. Of course you can get better pictures at heritage.

    And thanks Mark. :)

Well, heres one of mine then. What would you say this one grades??? This one has nice sharp diamonds and all the details are there, it has a great strike. I didnt manage to capture the details fully with my pictures. Im thinking MS64RB

First let me say it is a nice coin - so don't get distracted! I would really need to have this one in hand to form a better opinion. Okay - first my concerns (these could all be just because of the big pictures you attached and you have the coin in hand) - (1) The color looks flat in some of the lower parts of the coin (above one cent and below the bow, above the first feather) (2) The spots on the cheek and above the eye - are those rubs or just brown spots? (3) the shield looks like it has little rub. Again this could be because of your pictures - you have the coin in hand. Based off of what I see I would say AU58. Again based off what I see from your pictures - I could have a completely different opinion with the coin in hand.

Now having said that - when I saved the pictures on my PC(at a decent size) and look at the obverse - I say wow a 63 rb maybe 64 rb, depending on what the tick marks on the cheek look like. Then the reverse I still worry about the flatness of the color in those areas and the shield. Again this may not mean anything because sometimes (to me at least) in pictures the red looks flat and not as lusterous as a good rb.

So all in all I say you have a nice coin. In a second I will attach one of the questionable color coins from PCGS - one I disagree with, but oh well.

Okay here is one that PCGS called questionable color - no problem it does not change my opinion on the coin. I graded it a 64 RB (brown cause there is more brown on the reverse than I think a red should have). As far as I am concerned I can see the luster all over this coin and it is a good solid coin, regardless of what PCGS said.
