Like many people on this forum I like tipping with $2 bills and Ike dollars because they aren't as common and get people looking at their money and hopefully converting more collectors.

The other day I went to lunch with a group from work and as it was 'tip time' I tossed 3 Ikes for my share of the tip.

One of the other coworkers picked them up and went 'oh.. cool.. my kids would love these' and I said 'ok' as she kept them.. but didn't replace the tip .. so I shelled out my last 2 Ikes and another employee took those and did the same and so then I put out 3 $1 bills and thought 'geez... my $8 buffet lunch just cost me an $8 tip.

I drove back to work thinking 'ok, that one was on the house, ladies. My solace is that I hopefully converted two more collectors ...

If you had instead put down three $1 bills for your tip would it have been OK for your coworker to pick up the money and say, "I could really use this money to buy gas."? Just like a cashier or bank teller, if you want coin or currency that comes your way you must replace it. She stole your money - plain and simple.

Thanks Hobo.. I felt the same but couldn't think of a clever yet polite way of calling them crooks. LATER of course I thought maybe saying 'ok... but you explain the lack of tip to the waitstaff...'

I've never tipped anyone with coinage. Simply because explaining it to them takes too much hassle. My grandfather use to tip with Ike halves all the time and occasionally with Peace dollars. He would never just leave them on the table though. Always sliding them into the palm of the waiter/waitress and striking up a small conversation about the coin and it's history before departing.

I think it's just because he didn't want me swiping them :goofer:

I can't believe that they took the coins and didn't replace the money.
And, I can only echo Hobo's comments.

I can't believe they were so brazen as to take tip money off the table and not replace it, that is two kinds of theft, from you and the wait staff. They should have replaced the money if they wanted the coins.

    CoinGal,

We have to do lunch some time! Shouldn't cost me too much.

    Very rude co workers there.

You are way too nice to these people. Once thrown down, they are essentially the waitress's property. Also, to short the pile is to make you all look bad. You had far more class than they did, as you made sure the waitress was covered.

Next time you are out, tell them your kids would love the $10 bill they just put down and snag it for yourself.

    That would take some explaining...

:D My mistake. Ike dollars and Kennedy halves. I should probably learn to type better.

I'm guessing as with Stamps and cutting them in half (i.e. Biscets) and the chopping up of Spanish Pieces of Eight in many places, some bank ran out of halves, and got out the Dremmel tool and began to cut Ikes in Half. :goofer:

WOW there CoinGal07. How about us going out to lunch everyday. If your that gullable it may be worth any trip to get there. Why you could put down coins all during lunch and I'd keep finding some relative that collects them. Actually you could put down any money, even bills, and I'd find make up someone that collects them. What I would really like is if you went to a store and put down a $100 bill. I surely would say how I collect those. :headbang::headbang:
Maybe it's just me but I would have blurted out "Hey, you want to replace those with bills?"
Here is another idea. Print out many, many copies of this forums answers and leave it laying around at work.
Another idea is the next time anyone mentions going out to lunch together just say I can't afford to any more. I loose to much money on the tables.
If your not the mean, rude, ignorant person like me you might want to go to each one that took those coins and say how someone in your family just started to collect $100 bills and you were wondering if they wanted to contribute.
