I found this 1972 denver mint dime and it is missing the letters us. On the reverse side . can some one please let me know if i found a one of a kind, what its worth and what they think about it. Thank you very much and appreciate your reply.
Hello. It's a common issue. Called Struck through grease. We have seen many here on CoinTalk. Nothing major and on worth still 10 Cents.
First, welcome to the neighborhood! @paddyman98 is correct. What happens is that grease and debris gradually builds up in the recesses of the die and is compacted, and as each succeeding planchet is struck, the letters appear to get weaker and weaker on the coins until the letters finally disappear altogether. Used to be able to make a phone call or put it in a parking meter when I was a kid. You could get 1 pinball play (3 for a quarter). Or play a song on the jukebox. IDK what it is good for anymore.
During the Spanish Flu epidemic a century ago the local theater in Enfield CT would let you in for the admission price of.... a box of flies. My grandfather, a thirteen-year-old Greek immigrant set up flypaper by the family chicken coop. He boxed the flies and sold them to the neighborhood kids for a nickel (a shinny nickle) a box. Don’t know if anyone caught the flu...
In the movie houses I went to there was always a full hour of comics along with what you stated (how many of us remember Rocket Man)?
Later the price of admission went from 10 cents to 25 cents and they would give you a small bag of popcorn and cup of pop. Guess it was a way to sell popcorn and pop to everyone.
