hi. this is my first post here. I was looking at this cent and thinking it looked like a DDO but could also be circulation flattening. I can only find one variety of 1917 DDO. my question is, has anybody seen one with a 7 like this? in the NE upper corner of the 7, it looks like the something sticking out as if the 7 was over another number. I guess it could be a die chip or bit of cud and looks like this due to wear? I doubt I am finding anything new on such a well-searched date but I do not see one like this anywhere I look. if anybody knows what this is, I appreciate all suggestions. I gave up trying to determine if it is DDO for sure when I saw that on the seven. it seems to have worn line separation. anybody? thanks very much. No that's just from wear and tear for 102 years. If it was DDO, the whole date would be slightly double died. Keep looking!

yeah but what is that on the top of the 7?

I have never seen an over date mentioned on the 1917. I agree it is a well worn coin from a well worn die with part chipping out of the die there on the top of the 7, but not a DDO, but have seen several of eBay that are being sold as DDO ( not slabbed).

Not to stop you from posting, because that's ok to post and ask, but a lot of times you can find images on the web that tell you what you should be seeing. For example, by typing in 1917 ddo penny in the images section of google you get a number of very clear images for a higher grade coin. On 1917s though when you get down into the good and fine categories, sometimes the wear simply makes the date and other doubled areas look fatter. This, though, you can see that the date is clearly not 'fat' and there is nothing that looks like the known ddo for that year in this pic.

well, I am not asking if it is a DDO, though. in my post I say that. I say that once I saw that on the 7, I became more focused on what that is on the top of the 7. I am not even asking if it is a DDO. I am asking about what that may be on the 7. I appreciate the replies but they all have to do with DDO and I am trying to figure out if that is a die chip, cud or whatever...Best to All and thanks.

    Sorry,

I took your "I was looking at this cent and thinking it looked like a DDO but could also be circulation flattening." and "I gave up trying to determine if it is DDO for sure when I saw that on the seven. it seems to have worn line separation. anybody? thanks very much."

as open invites to confirm or refute it being a DDO... so in a way, your post still looks like it is 'asking'.

thanks, Kasia but, again, I am not asking about DDO...and looking at Google images is what I did for an hour before joining this site. there is no image with the date that has a seven with something sticking up from near the upper NE corner. that has nothing to do with a DDO...my question was about the 7, as it says in the title. I guess I should have left off the DDO bit but I reckon it to be something from the mint because it did not grow on the cent organically. I was thinking perhaps a 7 like that may be common to the DDO vatiety. I am not asking if it is a DDO but I keep getting replies about DDOs and the piece at the top of the 7 is not being mentioned and that is all I am wondering about...yes, I am well aware this is not a DDO. however that is not a normal 7 and that is my focus. Cheers.

well, I do specify the 7. it IS my mistake and I should have changed the title...I thought that by saying I gave up on wondering if it was DDO, that it would be understood I am wondering about the 7, in particular. if I wondered if it was a DDO, i would just say...'hey, does this look like a DDO?' Thanks.

DesertGem...thanks. I didn't see your reply until just now. I thought die chip, too. it is just that it looks like it is under the 7 but like you say, there are no overdates shown anywhere like this. I think worn die chip, too, but I had to check if there may have been such an overdate before I just resigned to it being a chip. Thanks very much for that into. I appreciate it.

at least some people collect die chips so I can list it as 1917 with die chip. thanks, everybody.

Not a DDO. Not a die chip. The top of the 7 took a hit and was damaged. After 102 years of circulation wear it has been worn down to give this appearance.

    Welcome to CT.

Collecting Nut, I think not because it is convex, not concave. if so, it would have had to wear down on either side of the top of the 7 to make it stick up, which isn't really possible in a space that small. I never saw wear cause outward growth of lumps. wear causes deterioration. which levels things out, not raise them. the spot in question is raised, not gouged. thanks for the input! Cheers.

It took a hit 75 years ago the circulated smoothly hiding the ding. Not an error. List as one and some poor fool will buy it. Thanks for sharing!!!!

nah...I hate selling to fools. they get the coin and need you to explain it to them. and, anyway, nobody who buys from me is a fool, they're a buyer. I respect people who buy my coins. but again, not a ding as you call it. a ding is not raised. a ding is gouged into the coin. and it is an error in that die chip coins are listed in the eror sections of the sales sites I used. this is not a vsriety, like the DDO, it is a raised eror if you look back and read what I posted three or four times already saying the same thing, like I wrote, i'll list it as a 1917 with a die chip.
    thanks for the input. Cheers.

anyway, thanks everybody and I have gotten all I can on the coin. I can't get hung up on one for too long because I have a lot of others to go through. I assume this posts on top. I am just gonna stop replying on this string so thanks again.
