I am wondering if anyone is attending the New York show which is only a couple of weeks away. I plan to be there weather permitting and I wonder if anyone else is going?
Since starting to collect and becoming aware of that show, every year I make going a priority and every year I'm unable. This was going to be the year but once again I won't be able to go. To all who attend, have a great time and I look forward to hearing your reports and seeing your new acquisitions!
Take some pictures and post your stories if you go! I have always wanted to go but never have either. John
I’m planning on going and it will be my first year. Since I’ve never been and my main interest will be shopping the bourse and just getting a feel for what’s out there, what day does everyone suggest? I’m leaning towards Saturday the 12th? Are the other days reserved for auctions? Are there any classes given during the show? I’m only an hour and a half north and work in the city so I’m flexible on dates.
Flights booked since last July, so I'll be in NY from Thursday afternoon 'til Monday evening The schedule is here, @frankjg - http://nyinc.info/events.php - the bourse is open from Friday to Sunday - Thursday too, if you pay $125 for the privilege of being an "Early bird". I'll be doing more tourism than coin buying, I think, but looking forward to it
I have never ever been there or attended a coin auction in person Never mind that I blew my coin budget. So, I have to sit on the sidelines. But, I have one gleamer of faint hope, I might be able to sell a couple of butterflies to a client for 5K. That would allow me to get a least a couple of nice coins from Triton auction (Roman provincials/ Kings of the Bosphorus)
Would like to go but never have. @panzerman Could you post some pics of the butterflies that garner $5K. Or is "butterflies" slang/code that I am not in the loop on. Besides, you could just look at a small portion of your collection and see nicer coins than you are likely to see at ANY show.
tibor.....here are some butterflies that go for 5K and way more Top drawer some very rare female forms of papilio adberus/ male /female of o. paradisea paradisea (extinct)
I will be attending the Friday morning on January 11th. I am glad it has been moved to the Grand Hyatt as previously it was held in the awkward and crowded Waldorf Astoria. I will be seeking out Irish, Japanese, Canadian, Brazilian and Portuguese coins. My name is John Sullivan and I live in northern NJ.
I will be attending, but on Sunday for auction lot viewing. I would be happy to meet up with anyone else who is there. I'm kind of surprised there aren't more people on this forum going to NYINC. I went to the bourse on Friday last year. It was fun and I learned a lot. I wish I could attend the lot viewing, auctions, and bourse. But the show is so drawn out that it's not practical for me (or most collectors, I assume). Since I'm fairly new to ancients and the coins I'm interested in stretch my budget I've decided to focus on the auctions where I can do appropriate research ahead of time and make a plan. I always feel a bit stressed at shows because I don't feel comfortable wasting a lot of the dealer's time while I dither/research about a coin. That being said if I totally get blown out on the auctions (quite possible) I may attend the following Friday to find a consolation prize.
I've only gone once. The schedule is kind of crazy and it took a while for me to figure it out. The event is actually 10 days long. There are auctions Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and the following Sunday. The bourse is open Thursday (for a $125 fee), Friday and Saturday. If you have to pick one day for the bourse I would definitely go on Friday. At most coin shows dealers will leave Saturday afternoon if not earlier. I can imagine NYINC is even worse in that respect since the dealers may have been at the show for an entire week or more at that point. The educational offerings are on Saturday only, as far as I can tell. I did not attend those last year so I can't speak to the quality. If buying were a secondary concern then Saturday might be the more fun day to attend because of those. Everyone peruses the bourse floor at their own rate given by how chatty they are with the dealers. FYI, at my rate (not chatty, but thorough) I went through the entire floor twice in about 6 hours with a break for lunch.
I attended the last two years. It was lots of fun seeing collectors and dealers from around the world. I attended parts of two auctions and enjoyed seeing some interesting items. I will not make it this year, but hope to hear from those who attended. I picked up two scale weights last year: the III VNCIA & bronze female head.
I am at the show now. So far I have acquired four action catalogs, a calendar, and a pen. I have also looked at many, many boxes.
Even colder here! -21celsius/ -32windchill Getting 5-10 cm. snow (2-4") overnight, then upto +5 tomorrow. Imagine envirnoment Canada issued a "significant snowfall statement/ really for a dusting????? Must think we are all whimps in Ottawa. Back to Triton XXII/ I am still in the game for 2 coins Probably just use my "leaf blower" to do snow/ unless it all melts first. I want to be home by 3:00 PM to bid live in Roman Provincials....
AncientJoe: Your collection is.....how can I express this.....staggering! I had a sensory overload looking at those treasures! Thanks for showing them to us! Your photography equals the splendor of those coins. As to the NYINC, for those who have not been to one but are going now, you, too, will experience a sensory overload. Mind numbing. Enjoy.
