Is it even worth trying to sell Wheat Cent rolls?

I have about $7.50 of wheat cents that came down to me from various relatives. The dates range from 1910 - 1958 and all are in decent circulated condition, but many of the earlier ones show decent wear. There are also some steelies, but many of them have a white material on them which just looks like aging steel. A few worn IHCs also snuck in to the hoard, but nothing notable.

What I don't want to do is put them on ebay as "unsearched rolls" because they are not (they didn't even come to me in rolls) and I often wonder how many rolls actually are "unsearched," but that's just speculation. But the only ones that appear to sell are marked as "unsearched," presumably because buyers think that they will "strike it rich." I have this fairly strong feeling that no one in their right mind, especially a coin dealer, is going to post a coin roll for $4.00 without first making sure that it doesn't contain either a 1943 copper or a 1955 double die or some other rarity.

So I'm trying to decide if I even list them or if I just dump them into a change counter and let them recirculate. Other random people may find them fascinating.

My LCS offers $0.03-5 each for them, you should ask yours.

if no one here on the site will buy them, then I can possibly give you my LCS contact info, he deals world wide and is reputable...or you could google Harold Rice.

Looking at eBay completed (not necessarily sold) listings, I don't find any failing to sell until the price gets up around $5 shipped, and that's without the "unsearched" keyword.

If I were you (and I might be, one day -- I've got a lot of wheats I don't care about, too), I'd put them up in a multiple-item listing with flat-rate shipping. I'd want to check first, but I think you could get 15 rolls into a small flat-rate box.

You want the buyer to get an advantage from buying multiple rolls, because that means you're more likely to sell them all at once or in a few large batches, and that saves you time and money. Doing flat-rate shipping will help you get that. (Or the old "$3 shipping for first roll, 50 cents each additional").

Thanks for the information and advice, everyone. Here they are all wrapped up, as they have been for years now. I'll try putting them on the for sale forum here and if I get no takers I'll try the Ebay or Harold Rice paths...

    Thanks again!

Don't sell them for 4 cents a piece. If they have sentimental value, keep them so that you can hand them down to your children, and they can hand them down to theirs too. Or if you want to commit a sin in the coin community, wrap them up in old looking red wrappers and sell them as old rolls. But remember, it is a sin to do so... No but seriously, go through them and check if you have any rare dates (1909, 1909 S, 1909 S VDB, 1914 D, 1922 D, 1922, 1931 S, and any doubled die errors such as the reputable 1955 DDO), and then if you desire to sell them, you can do so. If your LCS offers 5 cents each, you would get $37.50, which isn't too bad.

I appreciate your ethics. These days far too many wouldn’t think one second about advertising these as “unsearched” rolls. These days ethics are far too rare.

I do have one suggestion for you. If putting all that effort into a $25.00 or so return isn’t your thing, perhaps gift them to a young collector. In all my years, I have sold very few coins. But I have given away many. And the gift you will receive seeing the excitement in that young collectors face is waaayyyy more rewarding than the $25.00 bucks or so you may realize..... Just a thought.

Also do you make comics? Nothing to do with this thread, but I saw your link to your website, and it looks pretty cool.

Yes, I do, or mostly did, make comics. I may start up again in the future. I drew a comic every 3 days for 7 years and decided to take a break. The break has continued longer than I thought. Thanks for your comment!
