So I figured I think I'll try to do a set of IH's Conditions VG or better. I was wondering what the harder dates to get were? I dont want to do all the different types (1864, 1864L, etc) So Im just going to keep it simple. 1 coin from each date. (although I'll attempt to get a 1908s and 1909s, lol) which ones are the tough ones? thanks
Hmm lets see - 1867 to 1872. Of course the 1877 is the key. That will be a nice chunk of change in VG. The 1908-S is a semi key, but I actually think it is cheaper than the 1870 - 1872 dates. There are plenty of the coins out there just take your time getting them. This is a fun set and the 1877 is worth it - but don't let the 1877 stop you from collecting the set. I have one complete set, but am busy upgrading certain dates. I am still looking for the right 1870 and 1872 coins. Then my G and VG coins will migrate to my dansco album.
Hmm, don't know too much on the indians, but they seem like a pretty neat set. Gonna do proofs too? Best of luck man! :thumb: Phoenix
Thanks Mark Im going to go to the coin shop Friday, hopefully, and look at the box o' Indian Heads... see if I can pick out a bunch of dates that I dont have - which is a lot, lol.
Good deal. One thing I did for the 1890 -1909 minus the S mint marks I looked at ebay. Twice I spend like $15 for a run of 4/5 coins in VF. The 80's were a little different - still have a lot of hard dates for the ol dansco album.
1861, 1885, 1894 and 1909 are some of the ones not mentioned yet, but they are not nearly as tough either. Still good dates to keep an eye on though. I found those dates harder to find in a nice grade at a good price. Its also a good idea to look for a nice 1846L. You can find a pretty decent one for a fair price. But make sure the one you buy has a pointed bust because pointed bust is a trait of the 1864L. I was lucky enough to find a nice one on ebay being sold as an 1864 no L. And when you buy your 1908S, I noticed that prices on the 1908S fluctuate all over the place. Sometimes they seem to all go for alot and other times you see a few sell for what seems to be really cheap.
1877 is the backbreaker - the price list I am looking at lists 1877 in good condition as $950.00 and 1,200 in very good up to 3,600 in MS-60. the 1909-S is pricey too at $535.00 in good. 1869-76 ain''t cheap either all over $60.00 in good. Needless to say, my Indian cent collection has alot of holes!
I think the sleeper of the series is the 1908-S. There were only 1,115,000 minted which is slightly less than the 1914-D Lincoln. You can get a good 1908-S Indian for about $60.00 while the 1914-D Lincoln will cost you over $200.00.
To ask a question like that, I have to ask: Do you own a coin book? Remember: "Buy the Book before the coin."
Very good question - the one I recommend is Richard Snow called a A Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents. I like the information on each date in the series. Rick Snow also has PDF grading guide on Line.
If you manage to get a one per date set plus the two S mint coins you only need the other two varieties of 1864 to have a full set with all the types. (Unless you also want both hub types of 1886, that will add a couple dollars to the cost.)
Actually, only one more, since he already has one of the two (with a date set.) Also, neat, but not required: And don't forget the 1894/4-- neat variety. and: 1869/8 or aka 1969/9.
At that point he might has well get the 1865 Fancy and Plain 5, the 1860 pointed and rounded bust, plus the 1873 open and closed 3.
I started Indians for my grandson about 2 or 3 months ago. We still need 12 to complete it. All the coins are about vg. some have the full liberty. Fun set to work on.
I wont get the fancy 5's or those other crazy variations. I want a basic set. lol I already have: 1864, 1865, 1887, 1891, 1899-1909. so yeah, as I said, plenty of holes to fill thanks for your help on the tougher dates. I'll keep an eye out
Man Magman, seems like they like really spending your money, with all those types and all. Lol, best of luck with your set man! :thumb: Phoenix
Yep - and I did not even mention shallow N and bold N on the 70 to 72. And you can always look for these after the completed date set.
Lol, man, those Indian heads seem to have a bunch of varieties. Must be a great coin to cherrypick! :thumb: Phoenix
