Meow has been collecting coins for less than a year, and has tried many forms of coin holders and storage. Meow has been using Guardhouse 2x2 double pocket vinyl flips to put CRH finds in. Meow would slide some them into a modest 60 coin Whitman album. Meow likes the flips a lot, but sometime Meow wishes it was single pocket to fit the small cheap albums better. Meow cant seem to find a nice brand name single pocket flip to buy. The Guardhouse 2x2s would be idea in some situations if it was just a single pocket. But Meow does not think they make such a thing. Anyone have and suggestions on a quality single pocket 2x2 vinyl flip?
There is a reason for the 2-pocket flips. It allows the collector to insert a card in the second pocket with information about the coin. It is recommended that you use Saflips because they are PVC-free. Chris
That would work, But Meow wanted at least a flap to fold over to keep the coin from falling out during inspection.
Did Meow error by buying Guardhouse brand? If that is the case, then the no name single flips Meow has seen around must be a terrible idea.
I agree with the earlier posters that vinyl flips should not be used, except for very temporary storage. They will corrode your coins.
I've never dealt with Guardhouse. You'd have to ask them if they are PVC-free. If their vinyl flip smells like a shower curtain, it contains PVC. Chris
Does not seem to have much of a smell. Is not Guardhouse a pretty big coin supply brand? Meow thinks the make all sorts of holders.
I suggest you check the Guardhouse web page. The flips on their webpage are made of unplasticized vinyl. I think that means no PVC? Whoops...see you noticed that already.
I only use SaFlips. I use the 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" size since they accommodate silver $1 better, i.e. easier removal.
OK......But anyway guys, Meow started the thread to ask how to obtain a good single pocket 2x2. Any thoughts on anyone who makes one?
Is this what you have? Stay away from anything that says vinyl. PET, Mylar or polyester are three names for the preferred material. I'm confused how vinyl (PVC) can be unplasticized and still flexible. It is usually the plasticizer that is the bad actor, but the PVC itself will produce hydrochloric acid as it decomposes.
Here, from a website: "There are two basic types of PVC flips on the market today: Plasticized (soft flips), and Unplasticized (the hard or rigid coin flips). Unplasticized flips contain lower levels of chemical softeners than soft vinyl coin flips. Make no mistake, Unplasticized, uPVC or UN flips are still PVC flips. There is a widely held misconception about this, so let's repeat: there is no such thing as a PVC free unplasticized flip. An unplasticized flip is merely a PVC flip with less plasticizer, or chemical softener. As a result, unplasticized flips not only offer more rigidity, but are considered safer for coin storage than soft vinyl. This is why some manufacturers will refer to unplasticized flips as “Safe for long term storage”, or even "Archival". Ironically, unplasticized flips tend to be less popular among collectors who prefer the feel and elasticity of a soft flip. Just remember, when it comes to vinyl flips, the harder and more rigid the flip, the safer it is as a storage solution for your coins." from https://www.translinesupply.com/store/pg/42-PVC-and-PET-Flips.aspx It also talks about PET flips which are more expensive and also have some downsides.
I use the guardhouse usually. Basically because it is 'safer' for the coin than the soft flips. Though I like the feel of the soft flips. Oh, well. I also have some 2x2 paper holders. Even though the flips do carry a downside for very long term storage compared to the mylar (cardboard) ones, there is no chance of scratching with a staple and not as much chance of capturing cardboard fragments in with the coin like you see with the mylar ones.
I do have some of my coins in mylar but not that many. And the cardboard ones don't fit well in those coin albums.
