Here is a new Tetradrachm I picked up recently. Not one I was in the market for but couldn't pass up the price & was super excited to acquire with x-mas money. A much scarcer to boot, more so than her AE Provincials. For sure a top contender for 2019 list. Hopefully, this gets some replies than just "likes", "likes" aren't much fun to interact with. Tranquillina, (241 - 244 A.D.) Egypt, Alexandria Billon Tetradrachm O: CAB TPANKVΛΛINA CEB, diademed and draped bust right. R: Homonoia standing left, raising arm and holding double cornuacopiae; in left field, L E. year 5 (241/2 A.D.) 12.5g 24mm Milne 3420 Emmett 3449 Also bought and arrived the same day, my first world coin of 2019. A 1731 Hamburg 16 Schilling
Nice find @Mat ! Good score for the 1st coin of the year. The nose reminds me of my Salonina tet. EGYPT, Alexandria Billon Tetradrachm, 23mm, 9.8 grams, 12h Dated RY 15 (A.D. 267-268) Obverse: KOPNHALA CAAONEINA CEB; Diademed and draped bust right. Reverse: Eagle standing right, holding wreath in beak; palm in left field, L IE to right Reference: Koln 2983; Dattari 5346; Milne 4189; Curtis 1642; Emmett 3854
Nice coin, @Mat ! Tranquillina is extremely rare as an imperial issue (#168 on the modifed ERIC II frequency list, but only #37 on the provincial list which includes coins of Alexandria) so if one wants a Tranquillina the Egyptian tetradrachm is a good way to get her. That one has nice surfaces.
I would have bought a roll of them but, considering how thick they are, that would not be too many coins. I'll bet I could find other people here to adopt the extras. I agree with ancient coin hunter that the portrait is similar to other women of the period at Alexandria rather than reminding me of Tranquillina form other mints. Alexandria had a fondness for long faces it seems. Perhaps they had no good model for the new bride. Year four coins are rare so this is early for her. I have zero knowledge of modern world coins so would have appreciated knowing the size of the Hamburg. I can picture the Tranquillina because I collect such things and know what a tetradrachm is. 16 Schillings means nothing to my ancient brain.
Both are beautiful coins! Great reverse on theTranquillina. It must be hard holding a double cornucopia with lobster claws for hands!
Like! Ha ha, just kidding. That is a great Alexandrian with really full and legible legends, nice smooth surfaces, and not one but two cornucopias. I would have bought that in a heartbeat. Nice 16 schilling too. I need to stop looking at those or I will have to collect them as well. John
Very nice coins Mat. That Hamburg 16 Schilling is a gorgeous coin. Those two coins are a great start to the year.
Congrats, fantastic coin!! One of my faves from last year was a year 5 Tranquillina tet, rougher than yours:
Great score Mat I have two coins of Tranquillina, sadly none being imperial The alexandrian one is year 6, with a nice portrait but very rough flans The other is a cappadocia drachm, ex @stevex6 collection Q
You sure started off 2019 with a double whammy of great coins. I like the Tranquillina esp. since its a very hard to get coin, but since I am German, and collect 1500-1900s, I of course like the Hamburg 1731 16 schillings I do not have any of your Empress....but do have 4 Hamburg Dukats/ here is one. AV Dukat 1735 Hamburg Mint 22mm./ 3.49g. Imperial City of Hamburg Karl VI Holy Roman Emperor No coins yet for 2019/ I should know by the 9th of January, if I had success in Triton XXII
Oh man, no coins for me until February...bummer. That's awesome you've already got a 2019 top 10 contender @Mat ...a sexy lady Alexandrian tet!
