I am an ancient coin collector newbie, I only have one of the greats so far in my collection. I found a Pius for sale for $120 USD, its a bronze 10.65 grams, seems to relate to others in the RIC 827a collection. I was trying to find examples of Pius fakes but couldn't find any. Something about the reverse isn't sitting well, but I can't put a finger on it. Thank you for any insight you may have! Happy new year!
Since you are a newbie, it is mandatory that someone in this group recommend that you buy coins only from a knowledgeable dealer whom you trust and who will stand by any coin he/she sells. I volunteer. Welcome to the group. Nice coin. You're off to a good start.
thank you and great advice, I like the seller from what I can see... they stand by the authenticity of their coin. They are located in France, would be more than happy to share my source unless that is a no-no and people protect their sources? You tell me!
Feel free to share the names of reputable dealers. If it's a dealer whom you trust and are happy doing business with, you are doing a favor to both the group members and the dealer by letting us know about him or her.
As an old collector with over a thousand Pius coins, I can assure you that your coin is real and in reasonably good condition. This issue knows 'tight' flans and sometimes a crude execution. They occur with head left, draped and even cuirassed. Nice start for a new collection of Pius, perhaps? Frans
Very interesting stuff -- I'll admit I had no idea Antoninus P. had an "optimo principi" type. Might anybody know what the occasion was?
