I have a 1971D Quarter that seems to have a crooked S right after the word Unum. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

Wrong size or shape to be a mint error, perhaps someone having fun with a set of punches?

If it were from the mint it would be raised lettering.

    Yes.. Counterstamp letter S
Added after the Quarter was minted.
    Not a Mint Error.

What is the purpose for the counterstamp?

Only the person who did it would know.. There is no reason for the US Mint to apply it.

It may have been counter stamped by a bar or casino to keep track of the owners coins. Years ago they painted coins that the bar tender would give patrons for the jukebox. Just an option for thought.

People I know do this sort of thing all the time, but it is usually more interesting than a single S.

That is a 1/16th inch letter from a set of letter punches.
