I like to keep an open mind, but is there any way PCGS can tell if a coin is "first day of issue" and is there any reason why anyone should care?
(by the way, these rolls are only 20 coins each).

In my opinion, no there is no way they can really tell, and no, even if they could, there's no reason to care. Theoretically the best strikes will be the ones made from the earliest impressions by a given die but the Mint produces so many of these that they have to change the dies often so high quality strikes can just as easily be the 100 millionth coin as the first.

Certified rolls have to be the dumbest things I've ever seen btw. What's next, certified bags?!

I have to agree with what Troodon is saying. It seem to me this is just another marketing ploy to get costomers to pay a premimum because of the spin factor. The US Mint has no interest in the first strike designation of coins. So it would seem that this is all spin for marketing stratigies.

Sorry miss read the post "first day of issue" is a valid designation for any coin from the mint. I personally don't buy into that being worth any kind of premuim for a coin.

    all:

IMHO, The only way to ensure that you get a 1st day of issue coin from the US Mint is to buy the First day coin covers. Anything else is suspect!

And they're supposed to be the top tier. If they do this, what hope is there that any TPG can be taken seriously?

IMHO this is a natural progression that is going to eventually take TPGs out of the rare coin business.

We already have had companies that will "certify" the certification companies, thereby lending question as to the quality of their work. Now we have them certifying (for lack of a better term) pedigrees of coins, as well as not grading (their original function) and not authenticating.

As the services offered become more and more away from what the TPGs do (grade and authenticate coins), their useful life will become less and less. I have seen more and more slabs that merely read Brilliant Uncirculated. This is not a skill that one needs a TPG for, and so their utility in the public eye becomes lessened.

I've been dismayed that PCGS persists in their First Strike and First Day of Issue nonsense. They still offer First Strike designation for First Spouse coins. I'm convinced NGC dropped it only because they were sued and they replaced it with Early Release which I think is equally meaningless if perhaps a bit less deceptive.

I think the designation "Early Release" should be limited to paroled prisoners.

    Best idea yet!
    Encapsulate unopened mint boxes!
Then no one would ever see the coins that they would sell for at least 10 times the normal price.

    Good point!

Actually everyone is making a good point about TPG services, whether it's PCGS or SGS.

My feeling is this: Maybe at one time, in the beginning, TPG performed a needed function for collectors that could not or would not learn to grade, along with authenticating. But today it is more apperant that they "ALL" are in it for the money, and service, true integrital service, is not what you pay for.

The "First Strike" whooey, and now this, really is starting to kill the true value of a collectable coin.

Also this trap is set to exploite the coin types that we all know will most likely never show any huge increase in value over face in our life time.

    Just my opinion.

Should anyone care? In my opinion no. Can PCGS really tell if they are first day of issue YES. In order for them to get First Day of Issue designation they have to be mailed to PCGS and postmarked on the first day the mint issued them. They have said that they will not slab coins before the first day (for those people who are actually able to get coins from the bank before the official day.)

And the coins in the first day covers are both first day of issue, and first day of mintage. The mint has stated that the coins in the first day covers are actually from the first day of minting.

That must mean that PCGS received the coins in sealed mint boxes with the date of issue on them. How would anyone get those? All of us who order coins from the mint know that even if you place your order in the first minute of the first day it goes on sale, it might be shipped that day, a week later or a month later. (I'm not disagreeing with you; I just want to understand how this works).

I agree people shouldn't care because the coins aren't any different - in my opinion, even those in the first day covers aren't any different. Now, perhaps if they were involved in a shipwreck..............

Simple answer is they get them from the banks. The dates when the president dollars are going to be released are known well in advance, and any bank can order solid roll boxes of the coins during a five or six week window centered around that date. So the banks can have the boxes in their hands two weeks before the release date. Then on the first day of issue you can just go to your bank and pick them up for face value (assuming your bank has decided they are willing to fol with them.) walk them over to the post office and ship them to PCGS with that days postmark. You do that and you can get the FDI designation. In the case of the large bulk submitters, they have banks that are willing to order large quantities of coins for them. If your bank decides they don't want to fool with the coins are only orders a few and then restricts how many you can have, then you can only get singles slabbed as FDI.
