Those e-bay photos are awful. There is no way I would draw a conclusion from them.

Maybe they're drinking the dip they used to use. They're requesting the dealers don't dip their submissions anymore. Maybe this tight grading is their means of cleaning up their reputation. Swallow the evidence!

Do you really think that coin is graded correctly ?

How can any of you even consider grading the coin that Jack posted about based on the pics in that auction ? You can't see didley squat based on those pics. I mean c'mon guys - I'm the last one in the world to say that any of the TPG's get 'em all right. But in all honesty, you can't even offer an opinion on this one.

Just a note on Pre 1916 cents. In 1916 the portrait of Lincoln was modified to extend die life. Cents dated 1909-1915 are expected to have more detail than those after 1916. The coin looks AU to me, but this needs to be taken into consideration. Also remember that if the coin has a AU obverse and a XF reverse, it can receive an XF.

My opinion is the coin is a strong coin...XF-40 minimum with a whole lot of red , I will post pics when in hand..........................................it is not net graded, shows tons of red, I can see enought to bid strong XF $$$

experience, gut feelings or stupidity, it takes at least one of them to buy on ebay

I think both of those, all 3 of them, are overgraded. But at least the pics are large enough that you can see the coin and attempt a grade opinion. The pic of the coin that Jack posted - no way.

By ANA standards, you are probably correct, but those are the first 3 coin I found on Heritage. They were not selected for any purpose save that they had the larger pictures. That is the way all of the XF-40 coins I have seen the top TPG's grade.

Let's have a grading contest smackdown.

In this corner, we have three professional NGC graders , each grading the coin in hand under excellent light.

In this corner, we have a hobbyist with two very dim, out of focus e-bay pictures.

I know where I would place my bet.

I'm not saying the e-bay coin is properly graded.

I am saying it is impossible to tell from those photos.

I am saying the coin is better than XF-40...period, AND I'm saying it WILL upgrade. Now for the flames coming my way, lol

I say this because I have a pile of XF-40's in PCGS and NGC plastic 1 foot from me, not a one of them that nice

I do need to soften up a bit, not on my opinion, I stick to it, but...

my combativness, I apologise. I am all riled up over politics right now, and know better than to let it get to me like this. I am peeved beyond belief at a certain Senator of mine...I'll stop there

It's a nice coin...pics suck...it's ebay.....you really never know untill it's in hand. Sorry for being to confrontational on this.........

I've enlarged the pictures and will be honest with you. I too need an XF/AU 1909-S for a Whitman Folder I'm working on...

    ;)
