Once again it looks like I found one of the coins as either damaged or an error, I appreciate everyone's help and I promise I will learn quickly so I will not have to keep asking all these questions. I think this is damage on the coin, maybe solder or something like that but, I am not sure. If anyone has an idea as what this may be please let me know. I have enclosed a few photos, if anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance and please let me know if you have any questions or would like to see any additional photos.
Incredible major (intentional?) damage..... Welcome to the forum Art. My Mothers father was 'Art'.........
Good name, Art is short and sweet but half the time when I tell someone my name they think I said Mark. Thanks for your help, I just don't know yet what is an error, what is damage, what is normal. I have coins with gouges in them but I don't know what to think...Oh well, thanks again and Happy New Year.
Hi, I will need to look that up and see what it is exactly. This seems to be something on the coin or adhered to the coin since most of the damage is raised. Anyway, thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.
usually caused by sitting around in moisture un moved for a long time. even found like this in and around inside the car pockets ( I have found a few in my door pockets myself just like this)
Hello, I looked it up a few minutes ago and I cannot believe our good ol' US would use these metals to make coins but they do. It certainly looks like some of the stuff on the coin I have, maybe I will get a bunch of new coins and use a bag and seal machine to preserve them for 30 years or so. Thanks again, Happy New Year!
you have a copper plated zinc cent, the zinc corrodes from any little split or break in the copper plating, as it corrodes it pushes up the copper and causes bubble like areas that will eventually burst open causing effects as on your coin...
Thanks for the reply, after looking up Zinc Rot I believe that is what it is, can we just go back to copper pennies now? Thanks again.
