Two accused of stealing coins worth up to $1 million

Two Greater Cleveland men were charged yesterday in Akron with stealing valuable coins there and hiding them in Lakewood.

Parma resident Kevin J. Hartman, 37, is charged with breaking and entering, felony theft and safe cracking. So is Michael J. Patton, 38, of Seven Hills.

They are accused of breaking into Chet's Coin Dec. 16, disabling the alarm and using a torch to cut open a safe.

"They stole coins valued at between $500,000 and $1 million," Lt. Rick Edwards said.

They took the coins to Hartman's half-brother's house at 1301 Jackson Ave. in Lakewood and hid them behind a wall in the attic, he said.

Hartman's half-brother is Howard Trower, 38. His wife, Eva Knight-Trower, 33, was at the Lakewood house on Jan. 25, when police searched it. She is charged with receiving stolen property.

Howard Trower told police that he will turn himself in today at Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

Evidence at the house led detectives to search a storage unit in Cleveland, where they found model trains and toys stolen from Parma Hobby on Nov. 4, Parma Detective Marty Compton said.

Hartman is a suspect in multiple burglaries in Parma and Greater Akron, Compton said.

people actually think they are going to get away with 1 million in coins? even if they do get away all the coin dealers in the area are going to be watching out. and you have fingerprints on everything. i guess people think if you go out of state and sell the coins and wear gloves you are all set.
