I have several coins I want to crossover from NGC and ANACS to PCGS. Has anyone seen PCGS upgrade a coin during a crossover? Or would they hold back because they don't want to be seen as "overgrading" compared to other TPG's? I only understand the basics of crossovers, such as you can set a minimum grade or they leave it alone. Can you set the minimum to only be an upgrade? Observations?
You cannot set the minimum grade to be higher than the grade on the holder. I've used crossover a dozen times and NEVER had a coin upgrade. I don't think they look at it to grade it, honestly, they just look to see if it's close enough and problem-free. Having said that. I have gotten upgrades when I cracked it out of the NGC holder myself and submitted it to them raw.
I thought you could set a minimum cross over grade - not sure. The one time I did it I cracked the coin out and it crossed at the same grade. I personally do not think they hold back - I have read too many times of coins getting upgraded.
You can set a minimum, but according to the submission form, you cannot set a minimum grade that is higher than the current grade on the holder. So if it is MS63, you cannot declare your minimum to be MS64 or even MS63+.
Just recently, I have sent 2 coins, graded by NGC, to PCGS for Crossover. The first one did cross at the current grade. The second one, also crossed and they gave a + on the grade. In all fairness, the second coin was most likely graded before they had the + or the * grades as the second coin was a Rainbow toned Morgan and I indicated "Current" for the crossover grade. This is from the PCGS site: "For Crossovers: For a coin previously graded (currently encapsulated) by another grading service, PCGS will holder the coin only if it meets or exceeds your specific request."
Ok, so I think that answers my question. I know I take the risk of a crack out and then it grades lower. That's the joy of coin collectin!
What's the rational for why you want them in PCGS tombs? Are you planning to sell, or do you have a PCGS fetish? Just wondering -- it seems so much money gets wasted by people playing the resubmit/crack-out game. As a collector, I'd much rather have another coin, than fill the greedy pockets of TPGs by cracking and resubmitting coins.
I prefer PCGS over other TPG's. Also, I will not keep these coins forever, and many times a similar coin in PCGS plastic sells for a decent bit more than NGC, and especially ANACS. Coins are both a hobby to me, and it helps supplement my monthly income by selling some. Sometimes I feel like I have to give away my NGC graded nickels just to move them, when I can sell them for decent money in PCGS. This is not true for all coins, but what I collect/sell, it does. The ones I want to cross are for my personal collection, but may decide to sell in the near future, who knows...
All fine an good. I have personally really never cared that much about the slight difference in prices of PCGS vs. NGC coins in the realm of coins I collect. I think the big differences in prices really occur for coins well over the $2K mark or so. And, I also have no patience for the crack-out / cross-over silliness. But, to each his/her own. All the best with your crack-out grades.
I had a NGC 1944 P Jefferson MS66 5FS and had to give it away for about $115. The same graded coin in PCGS goes for $300+. I don't understand the market. I just have to adjust to it.
I believe I have sent in 11 NGC graded coins for PCGS crossover and five of them have graded higher with five others grading the same and one failing to cross.
On the PCGS boards, many feel that for the best chance of crossing at grade or upgrading, you are best to crack them out. That way the graders aren't grading through plastic, among other reasons. Plus, you avoid the crossover "tax". I don't know much about the grading standards of Jefferson nickels, but perhaps PCGS is tougher one those - resulting in higher prices.
I have an old green PCGS holdered 1889-cc morgan graded VF-30, that I'd like to submit, but would be afraid it wouldn't gain enough value over the green holder (for resale some day). To me it looks like a -50, still retaining some nice luster through the light toning. But I'm sure they'd never give it that kind of upgrade.
Then crack it out, superzimm, and resubmit it. Realizing that it could come back as cleaned, or what ever. Or go to a large coin show and get their opinion pre-submission
Send it in under the Reconsideration service. By using this service, they do not crack the coin out of the holder unless it grades higher than the current grade. You may also stipulate a full-point higher for cracking out or simply a + designation higher for cracking it out.
Reconsideration is a good idea. However.....one point higher (-35) in a new slab may not be as good as a -30 in an OGH. IMHO
Greedy? They provide a service and deserve compensation for their time, effort and expertise- or am I missing something?
About a 'nine' on the tension scale old friend....... I've a bit of a 'fetish' for PCGS graded coins but I only buy them that way. I don't 'crack (am not cracked) them........ No need to feed the beast........
These guys spend like ten seconds on determining a coins grade. Don't sound like I'm getting very much for my money. Ya want it graded? Buy it graded.
