AU 50 or AU 58 I'd place it in my type set any day of the week. I'm having a very tuff time finding one in AU grade. We have a show in Salt Lake this weekend so maybe I'll be able to share come pics too.

Frank, what is the dark/discolored area near the rim on the overse at approximately 5:30? Thanks.

    Just a spot of toning.

Glad to hear it Frank, as I had concerns that it might be mild corrosion. If you didn't already do so, please check it carefully with a loupe - it will make me feel better if not you. :high5:

Frank I have looked at this coin and looked at this coin, and something about it just doesn't sit right with me. I haven't said anything until now because frankly, I may be seeing something that isn't there. But I'll tell you what my suspicions are.

Based on the coloring it almost looks like the coin has slight greenish cast. Couple that with the way the luster is only remaining in the protected areas and around the legends/stars and it makes me wonder if the coin had PVC contamination at some point and it was then removed. I wonder that because there just doesn't seem to be enough wear to justify that much luster being missing, especially in the fields. It's almost like there is a line at the edges of the fields where the luster is just gone.

Now perhaps the coin is just fine, perhaps it is just the pics, perhaps I am totally wrong. Either way, there it is. As for grade, I'd say XF45. Have no doubt a TPG would say AU - assuming my suspicions are incorrect.

    Doug:
I had it checked by two dealers that I can trust (hey, is that an oxymoron?) and a 'coin doctor' who is one of the best.
No PVC. And no tint in hand.
Could be that I just take crummy pictures.
Or the reflection of my shirt.

Treashunt, that's a beautiful coin. I wish Barbers weren't so tough to find in better circulated grades, or I would venture into the halves tomorrow.

Frank, that sure is a beauty! I just saw this thread and wanted to as my own question of you. How is the luster? Some times it just doesn't translate into a photograph. That would be, if any my only criticism of this coin is that in the photo the coin looks like it has washed out luster but has retoned. The detail looks to be almost all there, though. I'd would agree it's a solid AU coin, albeit with a sort of mushy strike on the reverse.

    Mike:
The luster is apparent, under the toning.
It looks natural to me, but then-- what do I know.
