Many thanks for your ID, @dougsmit. I haven’t gotten to research the coin yet but I know little about the time. I did think the style looked different from the ones I saw on your web page. It was identified as Emesa by an old flip that came with it.
I took another look at my 25 Imperial Denarii and decided that this one is the most aesthetically pleasing—to my eye anyway
Lots of amazing coins - the face of the Gallic captive with gash in cheek on @TypeCoin971793's denarius is haunting. Here's a favorite denarius, at least for today, for the obverse portrait of Concordia, the event illustrated on the reverse, and the context at time of issue. The roman republican moneyer, Lucius Aemilius Lepidus Paullus, honors in ~63/62 BC his namesake and relative from the gens Aemilia, Lucius Aemelius Paullus Macedonia. It was minted in the time period of the Cataline conspiracy. The Aemilia family name can still be seen today in the Italian province name of "Emilia-Romagna", which takes its name from the Roman road, Via Aemilia, completed in 187 AD by consul, Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. The scene on the reverse depicts the third (TERtius) triumph of the moneyer's ancestor: the defeat of King Perseus of Macedon in 168 BC in the Battle of Pydna. Obv: Diademed, veiled head right of Concordia, PAVLLVS LEPIDVS CONCORD Rev: Trophy, TER above, L. Aemilius Paullus to right, captives Perseus and his sons to the left, PAVLLVS in exergue

There are some amazing coins on display in this thread. Great fun! @HoldingHistory , what a beautiful RR denarius. @TIF , I had never seen your Frugi denarius write up before. Fantastic coin! @Alegandron , that Apollo / Roma-horse didrachm is one of my favorite coins in your fantastic collection. @Orfew , that Vespasian portrait is really great. @Cucumbor, I love that wolf and twins didrachm. First Roman silver! Really every coin on this thread is absolutely fantastic and worthy of praise. One of the reasons I thought this would be a fun thread is that 2018 was a big year for denarii additions to my collection. Here are a few more 2018 additions that I'm really happy about. Roman Empire Septimius Severus (AD 193-211) AR Denarius, Rome mint, struck AD 205 Obv.: Laureate head right Rev.: Jupiter standing, facing left, holding scepter and thunderbolt, "headless" eagle at left Ref.: RIC IV 196 Roman Empire Geta as Caesar AR Denarius, Rome mint, struck ca. AD 198-200 Dia.: 18 mm Wt.: 2.33 g Obv.: L SEPTIMIVS GETA CAES. Bareheaded and draped bust right. Rev.: FELICITAS TEMPOR. Felicitas standing left, holding caduceus and cornucopia. Ref.: RIC IVa 2
I was looking through my collection and ran across this beauty... I know it's not in great condition, but there is something so delicate and simple about it: her small, pleasant-seeming profile with hair all done-up in the obverse, and the long, elegant, verticality of Fortuna's pose on the reverse contrasting with her outstretched arm. I just love it... Edit: I should probably add the coin, huh? Faustina I, AETER-NITAS Fortuna, RIC 348
Humble coin overall.. but I do love the youthful portrait of Trajan It is my favorite.. Trajan, AD 98-117 Roman AR denarius; 2.92 gm, 20.1 mm, 7 h Rome, AD 114-117 Obv: IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC, laureate and draped bust, right Rev: P M TR P COS VI P P S P Q R, Mars walking right with spear and trophy Refs: RIC 337; BMCRE 536; Cohen 270; RCV --; Woytek 520v; Strack 230; BN 819.
What you call humble I call a really nice coin with great style. Great portrait and I also like the Mars with trophy reverse. Nice addition Clavdivs!
wow these are some beauties all you have posted- thanks @Curtisimo the great! @Justin Lee - that Faustina face is so soft! Here are the best in my stash: my first coin as an unidentified gift in a box of old beat up coins when I was 14. Began the passion we all share. The most beautiful hands down: This one type thanks to @TIF to bringing this so meaningful one to my attention- Gaia herself on a coin!(will do better next time on cropping-software has a mind of it's own!) A foreshadowing of the hope for the Wolf/Rome and the Lamb/Yisrael: And the mighty and beautiful waters of life!
