It is pretty much impossible to tell the difference between a 68 and a 70 with these.
One of my favorite designs though.

Yup, that is a high grade piece of bullion. Nearly impossible to tell the difference between a 69 or 70, especially with blurry pictures.

Between 68 and 70, can't tell from these pics.

    69. Not many around with a 70.

I tried getting better pictures with the same results, shooting with my phone camera.

I was wondering @physics-fan3.14 did the mint strike enough of these that the luster changed much?

Absolutely, definitely. The most correct technical answer is "the luster changes with each strike," but that doesn't really answer the question (and you certainly wouldn't be able to see it).

I don't know the 2017 mintage numbers, but a quick google search shows most of the years have a mintage in the 150k - 220k range. I'd assume this was similar. Now, I don't know how many strikes they get per die on these, but even 50k strikes will change the luster quite perceptibly. If you wanted to study these in further detail, I'm sure you could find examples with a range of luster characters.

The big difference with these coins, however, is the textured fields. The luster is always going to appear and behave differently on these textured fields than they would on a normal basined coin.

I sold my only (ungraded) example of this coin (NCLT) a few years ago to help augment the acquisition of my present day classic commem collection. At the time, it was a coup....I've never regretted the sale but I miss the design in my collection.

Buy a buffalo nickel. They are quite a bit cheaper, usually ;)

Of course you are right, and of those I have a few. I shall forever miss the first love of gold, but then, haven't we all? I tend to think of it as a mistress most unloyal. One who would hoodwink and deceive me. It is only then that I can justify selling the piece..........No purity or innocence.

And I gotta have something to eat...........good night my friends.

Eh, I've never really been hoodwinked by gold. I've got a couple of gold coins (actual coins, not bullion NCLT), but I prefer silver myself.

I can see how the fields would radiate luster much different between the fresh dies and old. I just have never been able to see the difference in photos. I am sure it plays a big part of the grade.
