Merry christmas all! I was surprised with a gift of an 1897 (no mm) gold eagle that has been passed down from my wife's grandfather. I know very little of American (or any) gold, as my budget right now is more in the realm of circulated US type and world coins. I would love to take advantage of this gift as a jumping off point for further learning and was hoping that someone could suggest a good book pertaining to or at least including gold eagles. Hopefully something more of a history than just a refference tome as a doubt I will have more than just the one any time soon! Thank you

I also recommend visiting Doug Winter's website (raregoldcoins.com); he is a top notch dealer and has written many articles (and books) on collecting gold coins. You can read the articles on his site. The descriptions of the coins he has for sale make for interesting reading also.
Think you both for your insights. Ill look around for a deal on the book and they website is excellent, the descriptions are indeed very evocative and a good jumping off point for further learning.
I always like to reference every new coin collectors bible.... RS Yeomans Redbook Of US Coins. It is easy to maneuver and makes good sense. It is a solid place for a budding new collector to begin to build his knowledge base from...... And congratulations on the fine gift!
