I'll probably get the MEGA sometime.
I really like browsing my 2016 Large Print lol ... so much new information from my old 2006 and 1999, 1996, etc redbooks.

It actually turned my attention to some commemoratives that I've never paid attention too before.

I'm concluding you mean the Professional Edition. It concentrates on EF40 and above. If you only daydream at this level, use your money elsewhere.

Professional edition no longer exists, it was replaced with the Deluxe or "Mega Red" edition.

I probably won't buy until they make an iPad/ebook version. The physical book is way too big. I've bought the regular Red book and other coin books via my iPad as well as having my Coinage subscription on there. Very convenient!!

IMHO the Mega Red is a book worth buying every year if only for the expanded section (this year covering small cents) that they provide. It's an encyclopedia of numismatic knowledge that proves itself invaluable over and over again.

I think that most here would agree that every US collector should have a copy of the Red Book in one form or another. This is just the most highly evolved form to date.

    just my 2¢,

    Mike:

This year they also added a section on So-called $'s, by Jeff Shevlin.

That should boost interest in them

I have to ask Frank, are you adding each edition of these to your collection?
I hear nothing but good about these. I think at some point these will need to be a 2 volume set. I plan to get one at some point.

Figure out the difference between this year's and last year's, ignoring the value guide. If you really want the new information this year, buy the new book. If the new information can wait, shop around for last year's and save a few bucks. The values aren't terribly important to have, since there are multiple free online pricing guides available that are more accurate and up to date. Frankly, it makes the pricing info in the red book less and less relevant each year, especially considering the 2017 red book valuations had to be set in stone months ago.

Would it not make more sense buy the small, specialized Whitman Red Books for individual series and accumulate these at your discretion rather than adding 3" of book to your shelf each year? I would think most of the expanded info in Mega Red would be gleaned from that which is in each of the specialized Red Books.

It helps the people who are interested in everything. :)

I would not buy one every year though. I might grab a new one every 5 to 10 years.

Is this actually true though? IIRC the specialized Red Books don't have very extensive coverage on die varieties.

Does the 2017 version include last years large new section in addition to this years so called dollars or is it a different section each year?

It is a different expanded section each year. Last year's section covered Half Cents and Large Cents, this year's features small cents
