Found this 1960 D small date with an interior die break. The six in date is completely filled in and the bottom of the B in LIBERTY is also filled in.
I try to remind people to search better coins, to search cleaner coins, so that you can really tell what you're looking at. For example, search your pocket change when you break a bill. Heck , search your bills. There's oddities to be found there also. But....to address this coin......in my non-expert opinion.....what you have here simply appears to be PMD, Post Mint Damage. When I look at the filled in 6, I see just crud filling it in. Notice that the stuff filling the 6 is the same color and texture as the stuff surrounding the 6. That's just environmental crud. That area appears to have been cleaned with some sort of brush. I'm thinking that if you used a wet toothpick you could dig that stuff out of the 6, which of course would mean that it's just environmental crud. Now, let's address the B in LIBERTY . You might, just might, have a chance here at.....something. The color and texture appear to be the same as the letter itself. However, looks can be very deceiving. It could very well be the same crud, that has simply taken on the patina of the surrounding metal. It will take a much more discerning eye than mine to be sure enough to give you a definitive opinion. Just relax and wait a bit and one of the resident experts will get to your post soon. In the mean time, I want to thank you for your post and say Merry Christmas and Welcome to Coin Talk !!
Not IDB What you see on the 6 is a small Die Chip. What you see on the B is a Die Chip. Both are really nothing major so you can clean your Cent and put it in a 2x2 for safe keeping. @Newbie69 This is what an Interior Die Break is - http://cuds-on-coins.com/interior-die-breaks/
Thanks Paddyman. Now the chip on the 6 is just at the top of the circle where the curl comes back to meet the main part of the leg, is it not? And the rest of the stuff in the circle is just filled in crud?
Thanks guys. I was comparing to this. LDB3-1960D(SD)-001 3F+ Images are courtesy of Barry Godwin because it had some of the same markers and thought maybe this was a different stage possibly. And when listed under LDB i thought this was for Lincoln Die Break so my bad.
Thanks for the reply. I'm always interested in learning something. I guessed correctly about the B and guessed incorrectly about the 6. As I gain more experience, my guesses will be transformed into definitive statements. Thanks again and thanks for posting and starting the conversation.
