Album pages for storing raw (no 2x2s)?

Hey everyone, new to the forum here but not new to internet forums so I understand if this is posted in the wrong place or has been posted before. Yes, I have already searched :-D

I have been trying to figure out a nice, budget friendly way to organize inexpensive world coins and perhaps inexpensive US coins but I really have no interest in putting hundreds of circulated coins of all sizes into 2x2's before then putting them in albums. I do have nicer coins that are worth the extra effort but my wife and I also collect random coins by country together, just because.

I'm thinking a basic pocket page but somehow shaped to hold raw coins without them falling out? Is there a product or company that makes something like this or am I out of luck?

I've not seen one yet. It's a great idea you have. I'm going to search some supply outlets to see if they have any. If they don't, possibly you could contact the companies that make the albums and propose your idea to them

 

If you have the patience to wait for inventory, the millimeter sized Dansco pages are an attractive presentation.

My two US cents:

I agree with @lordmarcoven that the double-pocket flips are useful for your purpose. I use one side of the double-pocket flip for the coin and the other for the paper that has the coin attribution.

I find, however, that the pockets of the pocket pages that go in my binders tend to stretch a little after removing the flips a few times when I want to look at and handle my coins (I have mostly ancients and we like to touch our coins). That is when I have problems with the flips containing coins falling out.

So I took some fabric paper I use to make stickers and use it to secure the page pocket opening. It is a tape that is strong but which can be removed easily and re-positioned many times. I cut a thin piece of it and place it across the top of the pocket page pocket opening. (I should take a picture of this and will if anyone says they would like to see what I am so awkwardly describing). I tried other types of tapes but they left sticky residue on the pocket page that I did not want. This reusable sticker fabric paper is strong enough to keep a flip containing even a heavy coin in it, inside the pocket page pockets.

I would be more than happy to send anyone a piece of this fabric paper sticker to try out if they like. Just private message me.

You are sort of out of luck if you're looking for a cheap way to do this that doesn't involve 2x2s or 2x2 flips. If you put coins in a pocket page without a flip or 2x2, they will eventually fall out. Also, while the smaller ones will be able to fall out of the thumb-cut notch on the bottoms of the pocket, the larger ones will eventually settle there and leave the coin unprotected. I would encourage using 2x2s or the safety flips mentioned above for this. The least expensive solution would be 2x2s, at about 3c each, plus staples. Flatten the staples with a pliers and the staples won't get caught on the pages or scratch other coins in stack. Buy the half dollar size only, unless you need a few larger ones for larger coins.

 

Aren't there any archival-quality pocket pages that accommodate 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" Saflips? Or maybe the size smaller Saflips?

THAT would be an archival-quality solution to storage! Now, all we need is a binder that's archival, too. Most of those are made out of paper, shower-curtain vinyl plastic of some sort, or nylon.

And, here is how I use it. I like the diagonal placement and my plan was to write the name of each ruler on the strip so that I could see I more easily. I will get around to that. I am sure others would do a much neater job of it. Hope it helps!

And just to reiterate. I like to be able to touch my ancient coins so a stapled up flip won't meet my particular purposes. I need a solution that allows me to quickly get to my coin, take it out of its flip, handle it, put it back and know it is not going to fall out of the 3 holed page pocket even in its flip (which has happened to me in the past).

Perhaps 3-hole page pockets with little snaps or transparent tuck-in-tongues or something at the top opening of each pocket that will contain the flip? But how many of us would purchase those?

You really need to use 2x2 flips for pages. There are albums (you can find on ebay) that have 1"x1" square pockets with little flaps to close them, but they all have pvc.
Best is to use pvc-free 2x2 envelope flips like the ones in the link above from Dave's, and pvc-free binder pages. They're not expensive. I buy flips by the 1000 for about $50, and binder pages are about $20 for a box of 100. The flips I get have rounded edges, and are a little more substantial than the ones in the link. I like them better. They also stay in my pages pretty well.

Ill upload pics later of how I have mine in binders. Haven't had too many fall out. But I generally don't travel with them either. They go from shelf to desk to shelf again.

 

Hi! I was looking at the binder pages on Dave's site. Do you have to punch your own holes to put them onto binder rings? They don't appear to be three hole punched in the photographs. And if you do have to punch your own holes doesn't that reduce the number of pockets that can be utilized on each page? I like the way they look.

These pages are always 3-hole punched in the US and Canada.

There are many type of pages you can get, and many types of binders to put them in. If you go here, all the types of pages you'd want are shown. Some are archival, PVC-free, some are not. Buy the ones that are. Dansco also makes an album with a bunch of smaller vinyl pocket pages in it (album #7000), but I don't know if the pages are PVC-free.

 

They are not. I use one album with those pages in it for keeping track of purchases at a show. The coins come out of it and get into permanent homes as soon as I hit the door at home. Okay, maybe the cats get some attention first, but the suitcase can wait.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'm with LaCointessa - My wife and I appreciate being able to easily touch and hold circulated coins when needed (in the proper manner of course.)

The solutions presented here look to be both usefull and affordable - my only other gripe was the stapled 2x2, but it looks like flips are a fine alternative.

I'm still surprised that no one out there makes a one step solution for containing numerous coins in a single pvc free pocket page. Oh well- my collection is not so large that I can't just use flips
