Hi all I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. I was given a Dutch 1974 Ducat for Christmas. I thought it was fascinating that this coin has not changed substantively from the 1648 Ducat I also have. Broadly speaking, the design remains unchanged - over 350 years later. 1648 Ducat Weight: 3.49g Mint: Gelderland Obv: Armored knight standing right holding sword on shoulder and clutching 3 arrows. Gold Ducats of the Netherlands, Vol. 1 by Dariusz F. Jasek, Knight Press, 2015. 345 pages, A4 (11.7 x 8.3 inches) €135 from www.goldducats.com. I saw Gold Ducats of the Netherlands by Dariusz F. Jasek mentioned on the CoinTalk.com discussion board. From the sample material provided in the links, the book looked like a quality presentation. So, I bought the book in order to review it. I do not collect the series. In the first place, when opened, the book lays flat. The binding is truly perfect –bound to the highest standards. The illustrations include high quality photographs of every coin (where possible), as well as specially commissioned line art to complement the narrative. Nahhh, it wasn't me, I sold my entire collection in 2006 and have not collected coins since then. But it's not unusual for coins that used to be in my collection to come on the market from time to time. Usually at several to many multiples of what I paid for them
I still have your old 1586. Any idea where you got it from or what you paid? I wonder if I have any other coins from your old collection
I don't know for sure that the one you have IS from my collection. It very well might be, but it might not be as well. As for where I got it, I do not recall with any degree of certainty. It could have been an auction, a coin show, even a private sale, as back in those days I bought them wherever I could find them. Cost ? Could have been as little as a $150, (given the date), might have been as much as $300. But I can say with a fair degree of certainty it was not more than that. More than a few of the ducats in my old collection I picked up for melt at the time - which was roughly $65. You easily could as it was extensive. Many other members of the forum own one, some own several.
