Hi. Im new here but have collected coins on and off for years. I found this going through some old rolls of my grandfathers he put away years ago and am not sure what to make of it. Theres a bold line on the back of the head at the edge of the hairline and its just not like the others. Whats goin on with yhis? Any help would be great. Thanks!!!
Hi there, welcome. Can you provide us more specifics on what you think you see? I’m having trouble seeing anything out of the ordinary.
Look at the letters RTY in liberty and follow below them to the hairline on the head. There is a thick strip on the border between the hairline and field of the coin. When you compare this area with a normal jefferson of the period it is not the same. You will have to enlarge my photo to see it but its clear as day when you do. Its not the same on normal jeffersons and im not sure what could cause it. Its a bu coin thats been put away 40 years.
The line is not machine doubling imo and is not flat but raised and sepetate from the back of the head..if that makes sense
And heres another photo with a normal jefferson for comparison. The line at the back of his head at the position of RTY.
Right around the mint mark, behind the jacket fellas. It looks like a possible die crack reaching the rim. It's a bit hard to see the way the coin has been positioned in the photo. But I'm not seeing anything else.
Hopefully this picture will show what im talking about, if still unable to see the tail of the R in America let me know and I can re-position the coin. If you look at america, the R has a straight tail that extends through the letters E and M.
