Ben: Among others: Most Barber coins (dimes, quarters and half dollars) are more common in proof than unc.

An obvious one is the 1895 Morgan dollar minted at Philadelphia. The circulation strikes all went into the melting pot. Leaving the proof coins the only examples of 1895 Phila coins. Other examples would probably circulation strikes that are mint set only. Such as 1970 half. 1987 Half, 2002 and up Half. and the 2002 and up Sac dollar.
I was thinking about some of the Seated Liberty Halves. A couple of years ago Cave Troll had one he either was selling or contemplating buying (can't remember which) and was trying to figure out if it was Pr or not, hoping for the best. Ben
That is simply not true, at least judging by numbers of coins certified by TPGs and looking at the series as a whole. Check the pop reports if you don't believe me, but mint state UNC barber coinage outnumber proofs by a large margin.
p.s. that said, the only one that comes to my mind (other than some modern commems) is 3CNs from 1883 to 1889.
Some of the seated dollar dates are more rare in MS than in PF The 79 and 80 Shield nickels the 85 and 86 V nickels 1901 Morgans are better in MS than in PF in the unc range
The coin you are remembering is a seated half in the 1880's. All of those dates are scarce in Unc (when compared to the other dates in the series), but common as far as seated half proofs go, though I think in absolute rareity they are similar, for the most part. I suppose in 65+ the proofs are more common.
I'm probably way off base here, but... I have a few proof sets from 1961 and 1964. Seems like most of the business strike versions are worth more then the proofs in higher grades for most of the denominations. I just assumed it was because it was harder to find the business strikes in higher grades, yes?
