A fun surprise was in my mail yesterday. One of those COOL floating coin holders! Sent to hold a beautiful Demetrios Poliorcetes (the Besieger) and son of Alexander the great's general Antigonus I Monophthalmus (one eyed) from none other than my good pal @ominus1! I had let @ominus1 know that I was looking for more of the Diadochi coins and he hooked me up with this earlier in the year (at a more than reasonable price). I sure didn't expect such a cool way to display it though! Of course since then he has referred to me as ryro the besieger and I he as MonOminuspthalymus1! Here it is being displayed in a smorgasbord of ancient fun (and my uke)! Again, a big thanks to the MonOminuspthalymus1! Please post any and all of the diadochi coins you'd like, Surprise presents or whatever you feel.
What a nice gift and coin @Ryro you have a great display. Demetrios I is one of the great characters of the period of the Diadochi. I so wish someone would turn the wars of the Diadochi into a great miniseries. I've always wanted to get coins of Demetrios, but right now have just one. Demetrius I Poliorketes AE11, 298-295 BC Cilicia, Tarsos mint, 1.817g, 11.2mm. Obv: Male head (of Demetrios?) right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet. Rev: Prow right, apluster right behind, A X below.
Thanks @furryfrog02. It was given to me by a pretty cool guy (so he has assured me). @ominus1 I have your marveylous self to thank for that! Thanks @TIF. And that's just one shelf (I have a whopping 3). I don't remember who on here brought it up, but I would like to put together a cabinet of wonders like the old antiquarian gentlemen used to (and some still do) have. Rad Poliorketes @TheRed!! Great point about someone making a mini series about the diadochi. I sure enjoy reading and hearing all of their and their offsprings various exploits. I now have 2 different types of Demetrius Poliorketes. Here is the other one: Demetrios IPoliorketes Kings of Macedon. 306-283 BC. AE (13mm, 2.36g). Uncertain mint (possibly in Caria), 306-283 BC. Head of Athena right in crested Corinthian helmet / B A, prow right; above, BA; to right, bipennis; below. SNG Alpha Bank 956 ; SNG Cop 1185. Former: Kairos And here is his son: Macedonian Kingdom. Antigonos II Gonatas. 277/6-239 B.C. Æ (19.4 MM AND 4.91 Sear 6786 OBV: Helmeted head of Athena right REV: Pan standing right, erecting trophy Antigonus II (Antigonus Gonatas) 320-239 BC, was king of Macedon & son of Demetrius I. He took the title king on his father's death (283) but made good his claim only by defeating the Gauls in Thrace and by taking Macedon in 276.
My favorite type of Demetrios Poliorketes shows Nike on a prow and Poseidon throwing a trident. The tetradrachms are expensive in high grade so mine is not as attractive as many would require. The AE13 version is a fraction of the size and price.
I like that first display Ryro, especially the 2 Ushabti's from Egypt and the Eagle's claw on globe. Here's my favourite Demetrios Poliorketes:
Sweet set up, Ryro! What’s in the display box, top left? That ammonite is pretty sweet. I have half of a smaller one. Love that piece of pottery, top right. I don’t know pottery very well, is it a Greek piece? Erin
2 excellent coins @dougsmit. I am adding Nike/Poseidon poliorketes to my gotta get list...though probably will put the AE13 for now. WoW! Fantastic tet @Andres2! More like PoliorSWEETes! Thanks @Johndakerftw. It's a small cuneiform tablet. And nice call. It is a Greek pottery shard.
That’s right, I think I remember you posting about the tablet. My brother has 2 and he gave me one for Christmas a couple of years ago, but the writing is all worn off it. Antiquities are pretty sweet too. Erin
